Slowly things became worse and by Sept 2016 he could no longer log into his computer as the password was not accepted.
I traced this back to the shift key and a special character in his password. One shift key failed on some characters while the other shift key failed on other characters. I managed to get into the computer and change his password to something that did not require the shift key.
I then contacted ASUS tech support and requested some aid. We eliminated the possibility of driver issues and software issues, and thus determined that it was the keyboard that was defective.
But, of course, as we all dread, it was just after the warranty had expired. I pushed level 1 and level 2 tech support and finally a step higher to resolve the issue. Level 2 Tech support quoted a keyboard replacement cost of about $300, the exact cost of the laptop brand new. Hardly an option. I asked if they could send me a keyboard and I would replacement it and ASUS would no longer bear any responsibility (noting that I have built and repaired computer for nearly 25 years now and was confident I would have no issue with the replacement.) Unfortunately, Level 2 support said that they do not sell parts to end users or to re-sellers.
I scoured the internet for the specific part no. of the keyboard and failed to find a reliable seller of a replacement part. ebay via a china order was the only option I had and that would be taking a very big chance in the "China Black Market" that I call ebay.
So, bottom line, ASUS failed miserably in offering any aid in repairing a part that really should not fail so soon or even in the ability to give or sell me the part needed to repair it myself.
Unfortunately it was the first time, and now the last time ASUS will ever get my business.
This laptop gets daily use and is often on for 8 to 9 continuous hours or more per day. I use it for full stack web development & IoT development, and the processor is sufficient for those tasks. I like that it has an HDMI port for connecting a second monitor and it will even route sound through HDMI. The built in web cam works well for video conferencing, and does a decent job when the lighting levels are somewhat low.
I had also taken advantage of the Windows 10 upgrade when it was available and the installation went smoothly.
UPDATE: Complete Hard drive failure. Just crashed and won't restart, no warning signs at all. Don't buy this. Asus makes many better devices for only bit more money.
