I decided to catch up with the latest tech and upgrade from an 8 year old dell model which frankly got so useless over time that I've hardly used it in the last 5 years. Beginning as a noob to all things pc related I did my research and watched some YouTube vids on building a dedicated high end pc (newegg has an excellent three part tutorial for any you noobs wanting to test the water). Asus was a brand recommended to me by a friend for their quality mobos. Having heard about the imminent release of Intel's new Haswell processors I decided to wait a couple more weeks before taking the plunge all the while doing more research by the end of which I was all raring to go and picked up this little bad boy on release day. I'm glad I waited, moving on...

Features and connectivity - where do I begin, there's just so much of it. The good thing is it doesn't feel cramped inside a Fractal Design R4 case and all the ports are located in convenient places so as to keep cable management neat and tidy. This of course helps with airflow within the case and is visually appealing for any aspiring tech geek. There are plenty of 'pro' reviews out there on this so I won't bore you with what's already been covered like specs and functionality, the information is all readily available. I will however briefly cover some of its attributes that really surprised me and made me feel it was money well spent.

Overclocking - Asus makes it easy. Ok it probably won't suit some of you veterans of the pc world who will prefer to go beyond and manually over clock (which of course is covered by this board in its UEFI Bios) but for us beginners it was as simple as flicking a switch. The TPU switch on the mobo has three settings, off, 1 and 2.

I bought this motherboard to upgrade my 6 year old computer system. I wanted to go with high end components and didn't mind paying a bit more to get them. This motherboard was part of that purchase. The specs were great and reviews of ASUS have been great as well. This motherboard was paired with 32GB 2400MHz RAM, 1TB SSD, Intel 4770k processor, ATI R9 290x video card, and Corsair AX860i power supply. Everything was purchased from Amazon (I love Amazon Prime). :)

The motherboard worked great until just over two weeks ago. I turned on my monitor one Saturday afternoon and my system rebooted itself bringing to a "BIOS is updating...." screen. I did not tell it to do any BIOS update and after 20 minutes, I had to try resetting the computer and getting things working again. Everything I tried resulted in the same "BIOS is updating...." screen. Even after flashing the BIOS from a flash drive.

So now, I have to call support. They aren't open on the weekend so I have to wait until Monday...no big deal. I call Monday and after being on hold for 1/2 hour, I talk with a technician and explain what the issue is and everything I have done up to this point to try to troubleshoot it. He says there isn't anything else he can suggest to do and says it appears that the BIOS chip has gone bad. He says I can send in the motherboard or for expediency, I could purchase a replacement BIOS from their site and have everything done quicker (I had already said I really wanted to do this fast in order to beat the x-mas shutdown). So I go on the website, and find the BIOS chip I needed with the help of the tech who stayed on the phone with me and paid for overnight shipping (which was more than the chip itself).

Setup and install was easy - Driver and windows install went easy and the bios is as easy or as technical as you want it to be via settings. I have been an Asus believer
for many years and many motherboards (and other items) since I know their quality is real good and their tech support/warranty support is excellent. I used my existing
cooler-master hyper 212 which fits perfectly. The only other thing extra I put in was a cables to go external E-sata adapter since this board has no external e-sata.

If this is your first motherboard install make sure that your case has install hardware as this unit has none.

I was able to fully assemble my own system and power it up on the first try without one single issue. Lots of room for expansion. Just make sure you buy a slightly larger mid-tower such as a Corsair 650D if you are going to use liquid cooling, the heat sinks for the voltage regulators around the CPU are pretty tall and can cause interference problems with radiators.

I purchased this board for a 4770k build. 32GB of Patriot CAS 10 1866 ram, H60 water cooler, etc..

Completed the build and the system freezes momentarily once every 4-8 hours of use. Spent a month and a half reinstalling windows with various drivers, swapping out PSU, graphics card, ram and even got a new hard drive.. Use it a day and it freezes. Countless trips to Frys..

So I call support, which is spotty, sometimes very helpful, sometimes whoa its bad. Im striving to be polite and punctual with information. I RMA and they find a chipset is bad (never found out which one). After fixing still arent happy and send me a used replacement board. To get this info, even if you log into their RMA site, took calls with long holds and varying service... I receive the board, post it and there is my custom logo I uploaded to bios.. Apparently they sent me back my original board. I called in and after the upteenth 15 min hold, the lady assumes they possibly sent me the old board.. She offers to ship me a replacement, she called "Advanced with Tracking" and when I receive it, I am to ship mine back. GREAT, 5 min of hold and her typing later, and she changes that to I need to call in and if and when they find a replacement, possibly in 2 days possibly 10 or more, we will cross ship the product leaving me without a board for another week.. The first RMA experience took 2 weeks. Now I am to call and see when they have a replacement board..

I regret not returning the board to Frys in the first month, I assumed it was drivers or another componenet. I now plan to buy a new board, RMA this one and when I get it back, eBay it.. I don't really have the $300 to float tho until financial aid comes in.. Super Bummed as this is the priciest board I have ever purchased.
