Should you ever find yourself stuck in the swamps in Ohio, start farming with apples -- spitters and eaters. But not before you have read the pages and pages and pages of Chevalier's suffocatingly detailed instruction on how to go about it.
To quote the intro once more: "1838: James and Sadie Goodenough have settled where their wagon got stuck." Honestly, I got stuck in the swamp of words and reams of unnecessary info on apple farming and tree cultivation. This book was by a far cry not "goodenough." Neither the writer nor the editor who should have done a salvaging job, succeeded with this one. What a disappointment after having read Tracy Chevalier's brilliant Girl with a Pearl Earring. (What a riveting drama that one is!) Tragically enough the book could have been so much better had the promising plot been treated differently.
Spare yourself disappointment, time and money with this one.
I've liked and admired each of Chevalier's past books, so when I found this one, I bought it without reading the reviews. Don't make the same mistake.
