In my opinion this volume reaches the reader on two levels, one as a slice of American history from the stand of someone on the "street" so to speak. The making of this great nation is a matter of tens of thousands of books but few of them trace this history from the stand of individuals that were on the forefront of the actions taken by the more famous and documented officialdom that were more often than not far removed from the conditions they dictated.
The second level is the tracing of a family history from Scotland to the edge of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado where George and Amanda McIntosh (my great grandparents) made their fortunes form the harsh and unforgiving conditions of that part of the country. This is the only publication that I am aware of that traces our family so thoroughly and completely.
There is an additional potential that this publication could fulfill and that is as a tool for those that are doing academic or historical research. The many and detailed references that Robin Branstator includes with appropriate foot notes could well serve to provide information that is contained in many obscure locations.
