Sax man Dave Koz's At the Movies floats mellifluously into the second category. From the moment Judy Garland's voice comes keening through the crackle of "Over the Rainbow," we're transported directly into the cinema alongside Koz and a handful of high-wattage friends. Only in Koz's theater, the music is at times more heart-tuggingly pretty than we remember. "The Shadow of Your Smile" from The Sandpiper sends ripples of bittersweetness down the spine straight through the soul. About the Artist

For his upcoming album, world-renowned saxophonist Dave Koz turned to one of his favorite pastimes for inspiration. At The Movies is a lush, inspired collection of twelve timeless movie themes, underscoring the crucial role music plays in film, making it a must-have album for music and film lovers everywhere.

As a musician, Koz is especially cognizant of the importance music plays in making a film memorable. "These are songs that are so much a part of people's lives that I felt it was important to respect the original while nonetheless putting my own unique spin on them," he says.

Guest artists include India.Arie ("It Might Be You" Tootsie), Anita Baker ("Somewhere" West Side Story), Barry Manilow ("Moon River" Breakfast at Tiffany's), Johnny Mathis and Chris Botti ("Shadow Of Your Smile" Love Theme From The Sandpiper), Donna Summer ("A Whole New World" Aladdin) and Vanessa Williams ("The Way We Were" from the film of the same name). The album also includes six stunning instrumentals showcasing Koz's interpretations of the themes from Casablanca, Schindler's List, Cinema Paradiso, Pink Panther and Summer of '42 as well as an exuberant rendition of "Over the Rainbow" that leads off with a sample of Judy Garland's unforgettable vocal. The collection was produced by the legendary Phil Ramone and features a full orchestra.

"It's kind of a dream-come-true project, recording these classic film melodies with great guest artists" says Koz.

It was Koz's vision that attracted the stellar group of vocalists to the endeavor. Recalls Manilow: "Who doesn't know Henry Mancini's `Moon River?' I was delightfully surprised that Dave had figured out a very hip way of rendering `Moon River.'"

Dave Koz--Sax Extraordinaire

This album was recommended by Barry Manilow at his recent concert at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan NYC. Dave Koz did a guest spot at Barry's concert. Dave is apparently an old friend of Barry's and either used to play with Barry or still does. I'm pretty sure I've heard Dave on some of Barry's older songs, like "Brooklyn Blues" and a naughty little song "I Wanna Do It With You". Anyway, this is a great album, with great songs you will most certainly recognize from The Movies (hence, the album title--duh). Dave is a talented sax player (and I've heard plenty of sax players) who includes vocalists in some of the tracks, like Barry Manilow on "Moon River". Absolutely beautiful versions of absolutely beautiful songs with Dave featured in sax solos on each.

This is a collection of mainly slow songs, except for "Pink Panther" which always had an aire of sleuthing mystique about it. These are superb arrangements with full orchestras in the background. This is soft sit-by-the-fire-with-the-wine-and-someone-special mood-musik. 14 tracks, totaling a hair under 1 hour. Highly recommended by this little blonde polish girl. A small booklet is included with the CD, which I honestly haven't read, but there are several pages for those who are interested.

--"Over the Rainbow" (from The Wizard of Oz) begins with a snippit of Judy Garland singing the song, followed by Dave's highlighted sax melody.
--"Moon River" (Breakfast at Tiffany's) features Dave on Sax with Barry Manilow doing the vocal.
--"As Time Goes By" (Casablanca) with vocal by Anita Baker and Ingrid Bergman speaking from the movie at the beginning of the song.
--"Somewhere" (West Side Story) ". . . There's a place for us. . . "
--"The Shadow of Your Smile" (Sandpiper) with vocal by Johnny Mathis.

I bought this because I am a great Dave Koz fan. I regularly listened to him on the Los Angeles smooth Jazz station "The Wave", which unfortunately it really isn't any more when he was a morning DJ with Pat Prescott. Although Sunday mornings they still do broadcast his syndicated show, and that is great, a slice of the old Wave. The song that really made me want to buy this CD was his duet version with Chris Botti of "The Shadow of Your Smile". There is coincidentally two versions of "Shadow" on this CD, the instrumental version that you hear a lot which of course is fantastic, but also a version with Johnny Mathis doing vocals. It also is really great, I wish it would get some airplay too, not sure why. This is a beautiful CD with many old favorites, although most of them are more melancholy, a few more upbeat songs would have been nice. If your a Dave Koz/smooth jazz/movie music fan I would buyt it, its worth it.

When I got this cd I listened to it over and over and immediately downloaded it to my mp3 player. While I don't listen to it every day anymore it remains one of my favorites. The opening cut, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, is really beautiful tho I could have done without the opening vocals. When the sax comes in the purity of sound is wonderful. Another favorite cut is "Shadow of Your Smile" featuring both Chris Botti and Dave Koz. I'm not too crazy about the Barry Manilow vocals but they don't last long. I highly recommend this cd if you like the classics.

A nice collection of songs heavily relied on instrumental music. Koz plays large part of the songs on the album. Koz's music is sexy and smooth. It's perfect as a background music for a nice evening romantic dinner. There is a beautiful rendition of The Way We Were by Vanessa Williams. She has incredibly soft, silky voice which is so effortlessly beautiful when she sings Babs's songs. I think Koz's instrument and arrangment of The Way We Were is so lush and romantic. Other nice tracks from Barry Manilow, Donna Summer and Chris Botti and Peter White's lovely version of It Might Be You. But Koz's and Anita Baker's version of Somewhere is such a huge disappointment. She sounds awful. Koz should have featured someone else (Jon Secada sing Somewhere a hundred times better) to sing such a difficult song instead of her. That's why I gave this album 3 stars. I think the highlight of the album for me is Vanesssa Williams' singing The Way We Were (lyrics by Alan and Merilyn Bergman). She revives the song with such freshness and ease. She should consider doing an album dedicated to Barbra Streisand's soft sentimental ballads. Her voice would definitely suit Babs' romantic pop songs written by the Bergmans.

The song selection is very good in the album. Dave Koz shows off his talent as an artist who can pull off a lot of standard songs from the movies. Most of the songs in the album have been recorded by many different artist but he managed to bring charms, freshness and vitality to most of the songs on this album. But one of the most disappointing tracks is "Somewhere" by Anita Baker. She just hasn't got the voice to sing such a heavy number where you've got to have the beautiful vocal range like Barbra Streisand to sing that kind of vocally challenging song. The most annoying thing is that her voice is completely out of tune and out of place in the whole album. Nevertheless, the rest of the album is saved by Barry Manilow and gorgeous rendition of Barbra Streisand's The Way We Were by Vanessa Williams.
