After 30+ years, you can never tell what you are going to get. Even if you scrub down the outside, the internal components have had a few decades of wear and tear.. Fire buttons aren't as responsive, movement is a little sluggish, etc.
After ordering a few of these from Amazon and trying to find a way to also use them for PC gaming (aka 2600DaptorII), I read on an Atari forum about Best Electronics. They make replacement components which allow you to upgrade the worn out 1970/80s era technology with more durable modern components.
[...]
So if you still have some of these joysticks floating about but they don't work as well as they used to, you can upgrade them to better than new.
Have fun with your friends! Play head to head - you on the upgraded model while they fumble along with the 1979 fire button.

Great classic joystick, but uncertain quality after 30+ years. But there is a way to make them NEW again.

The controller works ok, sometimes the joystick doesnt like to move left unless I jiggle it a little, bit usually works good. Cant complain considering these things were made in the early 80s. Its a litrle risky buying these old atari 2600 joysticks, the sellers all claim they work fine, but its a crapshoot on whether or not you get one that works well, i got lucky and got one thats decent.

As promised, an original CX-40. Arrived a little dusty, but, hey, it's also thirty years old. Cleaned it up, looks good as new (minus slight wear). I have another Atari-compatible joystick with microswitches, I really prefer the feel of the original "disc" contacts, which this has. I've been using it with my Atari 800XL computer, controlling Pac-Man is much easier than with the compatible joystick. All in all, very happy with it.

Overall waste of money. Don't register direction consistently, cheap hard to press, get what you pay for.

- Clean looking, new, packaged well
- Good shipping time
- Borderline unusable. Have to push joystick in the desired direction so hard to get it to register you feel like you might break it (haven't yet, which is possibly a testament to its strength). Mrs. Pack Man, Tennis, Asteroids are HARD to play... Button has a crisp center spot, but unless you are VERY intentionally hitting the center it's also hard to use.
- EXTERNAL build quality seems fine, but the button and joystick sensitivity are so low (and thus seem so cheap) that most games are just frustrating to play.
- One of 2 joysticks purchased does not consistently send movement signals. For example, while playing Tennis your character will stutter occasionally. If offered a refund I'd take it, but will likely not try to get them replaced. Will probably throw them away once I get something better.

I used it, it broke. I opened it, realized why it broke. The original Atari controllers had springs between the cardinal points at the base of the joystick handle and the electronic contact points, so that kids cranking on it wouldn't break it. Then again, that was the 80's, when we didn't regard electronics as disposable. By comparison, this doesn't have springs, just an awkwardly designed piece of plastic which snapped. I Crazy Glued it back together... it snapped again. Just really bad decision to use this quality of plastic for a piece intended to take so much abuse. I've read other reviews. All say the same thing. I really wish the manufacturer would address this flaw, as it is otherwise a decent retro controller.

Would have gave this joystick 5 stars, but the down position wouldn't work! After a little troubleshooting I found that it was the cable. So instead of sending it back and ordering another one that could be bad, I decided to removed the cable connected to the new joysticks pcb, it was soldered on btw, and replace it with my old joysticks cable. Had to remove the old connectors and then soldered using the same color/pin assignment ex, blue=up etc etc.. for the rest of the colored wires. It works great now. I wish the seller was honest when he/she said it was fully tested and works 100%..yeah right, what a joke! Can't remember the seller, but they get a -1 star as far as i'm concerned!

My controllers were listed as Used, "Very Good" condition, but both controllers were absolutely filthy and had apparently been chewed on at some point. And the prongs on one of the connectors were completely mangled. It took some doing, but I managed to straighten them out enough to get the connector to plug in. Product not sold as advertised.

Ordered two of these for use with emulators and my real Commodore 64. The joysticks are not exactly like the original - missing the rubber foot pads, missing the orange paint on the top, use black screws instead of the original silver, thinner plastic, and produce a noticeable pop when moved around from the pressure pads. The pop sound is caused by the pressure sensitive pads on the PCB - for some reason the PCB is covered by very thick transparent plastic, rather than the thin plastic coating the original joysticks used. It is also sandwiched/back-faced - the bottom side of the circuitboard is masked with another opaque plastic layer covering all the traces and solder points which would make it more difficult to repair the wiring. The spring used for the fire button is wider than the original Atari joystick spring, and the PCB is smaller. With all of that said, (made in Taiwan), the functionality is the same and the feel is similar. If you are looking to exactly duplicate the real experience, then you would want to find the real Atari joysticks.
I can't recommend using these for games like Track & Field, Summer Games, Winter Games, (any of the Epyx games), Hunchback Olympics, etc etc - any game requiring repetitive motion will most certainly break these controllers due to the thinner than optimal plastic stick.
