When I saw this game unit at a special price before Christmas, I decided to go all nostalgic and pick it up as a surprise for my partner, who also loved the old Atari games. The unit was backordered, and I didn't receive it until well after the holidays, which was not really a problem.
When I set the unit up, I found there were very few instructions to go with it and had to play with it for a while to figure out all of the functions. Of course there are no connections to a high definition television, but fortunately my old 37" HDTV has an RCA input, so I was able to hook it up. The video quality is awful, of course, but 200 lines of resolution when we're used to over 1,000 is a huge difference. I was impressed with the number of games available, but not thrilled with many of them. The most popular games from that era are not included with the unit, which I knew in advance.
My biggest complaint has to do with the function of the controllers... they are virtually identical in form to the original joysticks, but rely on an infrared wireless connection to the joystick rather than using wires. Initially, I thought that was great, but soon learned that the responsiveness suffers significantly, so much so that playing some of the games is nearly impossible. During my initial use, the joysticks were no more than 4 feet from the game box. the I don't have any of the original wired joysticks, but I understand that if I did, they could be used on this console, which would probably improve the experience.
We've played with the unit a couple of times, but the frustration of the "lack of control" with the joysticks caused us to relegate it to a shelf to gather dust. I'm certainly happy that I bought this at a much reduced price... if I'd paid full price, I'd be very upset.
