So, since it's not in the description I will tell you the tip numbers: the round tip is number 806 and the tip opening is 1/2 in. The star tip is number 824. It also comes with a little insert directions for mashed potatoes, eclairs, cream puffs, crullers and meringues. By the way, there is no extra container/ holder.. it all just comes in a small box which I kept and use it for storing the bag and tips.
BOTTOM LINE: great buy and try to get it with the 4 for 3 promo. I already used the round tip to make eclairs, cream puffs, and french macarons. I have yet to use the star tip, maybe I'll make some cupcakes.. I definitely recommend buying these!
I looked all over for large tips and ended up finding them here. The bag and tips sealed well and did a great job. The the reviewers are right. I am looking forward to trying them with mashed potatoes or deviled eggs.
The mouth of the round tip measured in at 14mm diameter(large enough for me to stick a finger through) and the star tip was 10mm.
Cleaning: It's easy with soap, water and your hands. Doesn't stink like plastic. It WILL take the smell of the last food contact which is mostly butter here. Air dry on top of a long juice cup overnight to make sure every water drop is evaporated and store it in a ziploc bag or tupperware with the tips.
Overall, this is great purchase for beginners who will stay forever beginners. Should be in every wedding registry. This is all you will need for the rest of your life when it comes to decorating. Just buy other tips if you want more designs but I dont think so unless you win the Next Big Cupcake Star or something. Can't go wrong but remember, the bag is not HUGE just for simple meduim jobs.
Is it absolutely necessary to have a coupler? The answer is only if you need to change tips and you want the ease of using one bag.
I had no problems cleaning the bag. The easiest way I've found is to invert the bag so that the inside covered with frosting is on the outside of the bag, and then clean with warm soapy water. You also need to do it right away, don't let it sit there before you clean it.
If you didn't want to use the bag, you could use disposable ziploc bags, and snip part of the corner off so that your tip fits snugly.
The tips are the right size for doing those lovely big swirls on cupcakes, and you can certainly use the star tip to do shells for a border on a cake.
If you are an amateur and wanting to get something inexpensive to decorate cupcakes with, get this set.
First, the quality. The bag is thick enough to give an solid impression of quality. The major drawback would be that it is hard to turn it over, for cleaning purposes or to put the tip inside.
The plastic is easy to clean, even with pastes with a lot of fat: buttery cream,or for instance pistachio " creme a patisserie".
The bag's size: big enough to inject your wonderful pastes, even if you will probably have to do it in 2/3 times if you have a big volume. Yet it remains easy to manipulate, which wasn't the case for my former French bags, way too big.
The tips: there are not small or narrow. You will have to adjust the thickness of your paste to make sure it is easy to handle, but it's no big deal. Never had an issue with 4/5 different pastes.
For beginners or for people who don't care about having really fancy designs, I would recommend this product. Quality is great, easy to wash, and those two tips are enough for 99% of patisserie-lovers.
It is more relevant to learn to manipulate theses 2 tips and have precise drawings than buying 15 different ones with out-of-nowhere patterns you will probably loose somewhere in a cabinet.
