From the Author

What do the art of medicine and the art of fiction have in common? More than you might think. Patients are real people who need to be related to in three dimensions: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Characters in a novel must be drawn in the same three dimensions, so they seem like real people. Each patient's illness is a story in which they are the lead character--it is not possible to provide effective care to a patient without knowing their story. Characters in a novel require a story to act upon. In this way, the roles of doctor and writer are the same. Each must understand their central character and that character's story. Medicine and writing satisfy the same human need, a universal desire to touch the lives of others in an intimate and meaningful way. It is why I became a doctor, and why I write novels.
