I read a lot of apologetics books. I read a lot of what unbelievers write as well. When I read a book, I look for something new and different, not just a rehashing of the same material.

Andy Bannister's book is new and different - and good.

First of all, it's the funniest apologetics book I have ever read. There is some laugh-out-loud funny writing. It's a Christian version of British humor (if you like Monty Python...)

Secondly, it shows the ridiculousness of the arguments of the new atheists. It is cogently written.

Thirdly, it uses humorous examples to make the points. There is great power in parable as Jesus demonstrated in the gospels. he opens every chapter with a story that illustrates the point of the chapter. For example, idea that atheism is not a belief in anything, just a lack of belief that there is a god. His friend says "sweden does not exist" and when asked for evidence of such a claim, the a-swedenist replies "I don't have to prove anything. I just don't believe in Sweden. my belief is not a belief" (I'm paraphrasing here)

A breath of fresh air book

I only wish it wasn't over. I enjoyed this book so much I could have happily gone another 200 pages were they there to read. This book is concise yet precisely on point - Bannister makes his argument without needing twice as many words to do so, and that is nice. It's deep but not so esoteric that one need be in seminary to read it. The humor and satire is great, totally disarming for puffed up believers and atheists alike. Bannister has a good eye for irony and a smart way with analogies and words. This was a breath of fresh air book - small enough not to be too intimidating to start when I had an unplanned free 20 minutes, deep enough not to make me nauseated by superficial niceties (like many Christian category books today), and perfectly suited to the exact conversations I have been having with an atheist friend over the last year. You can tell Bannister has interacted with a lot of real atheists and agnostics and doesn't hold them in a contemptuous light. Even when he pokes fun at their arguments in a satirical way he doesn't stoop to personal poop-slinging.

I really like that after each chapter there is a list of books for further reading so you can, only if you wish, dive deeper into the subject just presented.

There were many great examples that are memorable, and useful in discussion! I will read this book again, to help the reasoning sink in deep.

Andy Bannister does a fantastic job of pulling away from the harshness that plagues so much of the intellectual debates around faith and atheism. Definitely levels out the 'playing field' so to speak in asking ourselves to be more honest with ourselves. Highly recommend this book. It is best not to read this while drinking coffee... not if you don't want hot coffee up your nose (and potentially sprayed across nearby furniture). This is not because Andy takes cheap shots, but because of the funny pictures he paints. Calling something "Hindenburgesquely wrong" for example, or humourously suggesting that if more of us lived by the principle of "do unto others" it would lead to lower insurance premiums. Perhaps the British influence has something to do with it.

Quotes of some parts I really liked, either for the humour or the picture:

"It often comes as a shock to many atheists to know that there is surprisingly good evidence for God, not least because many religious folks, in between the book burnings, inquisitions, and causing plague, pestilence, and war that occupy the daylight hours for most of us, have actually spent time thinking."

"The problem is the woefully naïve idea that there is such a thing as neutrality, a kind of educational Switzerland of the mind, a sterilized, value-free homogenous zone from which everything but pure Reason(TM) has been expunged"

"But, of course, such a bite-sized god, whatever he might be, certainly would not be worthy of anything other than our pity and disdain. Why not just go the easier route and invest in a dachshund rather than a deity."
