In regards to some of the negative reviews, I haven't noticed any problem with the wood being too soft. It is made from fast grown soft pine, so I was expecting it to be a lot softer than it is. But I've had dogs and cats play in and around it, hauled it to different rooms rather inelegantly and tools fell on it s pieces- so far no marks. Too, the box was in the hallway for six weeks where cats and dogs knocked it over, chewed through the box, and used it as a launch pad.
I don't know if that six weeks in the box countered it or what, but we didn't have any problems with the finish smell either when it was put together.
As for the changing pad issue, a standard rectangle bassinet mattress fits perfectly. It was pretty easy to find, and significantly cheaper than the special contoured change pads.
One piece of wood split during assembly, but other than that it was pretty simple to put together. Instructions were clear.
All in all, it's beautiful, functional, and is holding up well to day to day use. I'd recommend it to a friend.
Unfortunately, I had two issues with this crib that still really irritate me. They label all of the small pieces, but the legs are all generally the same shape and completely unlabeled. This led to an issue where I had to take the crib apart partially to switch one of the legs out. The manual refers to these parts as "left rear leg" or "right front leg" but if I'm in the middle of assembly, I'm not always really sure which that really is. Naming parts (but not labeling them!) based on their final destination is not helpful, particularly if some of the parts that look identical in the manual are intended to be left over initially.
Second, the styrofoam used to take up empty space in the packaging will explode, leaving you with little tiny styrofoam balls statically attracted to everything in your house. Expect to see them for perhaps the rest of your life.
I'd probably buy this again but not bother cleaning the entire room before assembling because, why bother? I'll just have to clean and clean and clean again to get the debris out.
Anyhoo, the crib is pretty sweet. It's relatively easy to put together, has options for changing the height of the mattress, and is super sturdy (i.e. pretty dang heavy).
Buyer's note: Not sure what this seller is thinking, but almost $600 is way too much for the crib. There are 30+ online retailers, including Target, that sell it for $350 or less.
