In 276 BC, Alexandria, Egypt is the most vibrant and influential city in the Mediterranean. But Egyptians are shocked when they discover Anubis, god of the dead, is killing men working on the Pharos Lighthouse. The evidence is inexplicable. The victims’ bodies have no wounds and the killer’s tracks are enormous animal prints. Egyptians believe the jackal-headed god doesn’t want the new lighthouse built.
Into this unearthly scene steps Archimedes, a new student with extraordinary skills in mechanics and science. He is there to attend the School of Alexandria and credits Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, for blessing him with the wisdom half of her powers. The pharaoh, desperate to get his lighthouse built, asks Archimedes to use his exceptional abilities to solve the crimes that only a vengeful god could commit and a12-year-old genius can unravel. But Archimedes believes the murderer is more corporeal than spiritual and has to tread carefully when he applies the cold logic of Greek science in a sultry, mystical world of Egyptian culture. When Archimedes uses an ancient Egyptian scroll to put him on the trail of the killer, he also finds another god returned from the dead. Now Archimedes is going to need Athena’s war skills.

About the Author

Jeryl Schoenbeck wrote his first book when he was 9, sending off a series of drawings and a story idea to Charles Schultz, the creator of Peanuts. Schultz personally wrote back and, although he had to reject the idea, encouraged the young author to keep writing. After earning his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Jeryl worked in newspapers for a while and then went back to college to get his teaching degree, later earning his Master's Degree in education. As a middle school teacher of ancient civilizations, reading, and writing, he wanted his students to read a historical fiction book geared toward children about a real person from ancient Greece. He believed ancient civilizations could be more exciting than the text books make it sound. There were not many choices of books, so he took Schultz's advice and wrote his own. He lives with his wife Linda, also a teacher, in Wisconsin. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

I gave this book 5 stars because once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Perhaps because it It's about a young teen age boy, you might think this is a book for children. Not so. Although 2 of the main characters are indeed young teens, the book. It is well written and never once did I feel like I was being talked down to or alienated. I lived every moment of book I loved the time setting, the quick thinking young man's creative ways of repeatedly using mind over might to solve those mysteries that needed solving.
It was a fast read and while not a deep thinking book it was a very enjoyable, entertaining and really fun read. I would & will recommend it to my friends both young and old. No graphic violence, sex or offensive language Just a really good story anyone from young adult to mature adult can read without reservation.
If you want to read a book simply for the pleasure of reading, start here. This story was both enticing and refreshing. Reading it was a rewarding experience. I was smiling when I finished the last page and THAT'S the important tell for me. Yes, you will consider the time you spend reading this book well spent. Enjoy yourself. :)

Wonderful story line, engaging characters. The author did a stellar job of creating the scenes and making them realistic. There was just enough description to bring the market to life and not turn into a diatribe. It was busy, bustling and colorful. The antagonists in the story were true villains and vile characters. Although the main character was only twelve years old, he was so bright and engaging and obviously brilliant that his age didn't matter, it was his mind and actions that took my breath away.

I have looked for more books by this author and cannot find them, I wish he would write more, because I would buy them, and I rarely say that. So yes this book was that good and that well written. It was exciting and richly satisfying.

I just finished reading Athena's Son and loved it, literally couldn't put it down. Writing, character development, plot, dialogue all good. I would actually give it 4.95 stars only because it needs to be edited again for small, probably transcription errors such as small words (i.e. a, the, etc) being used twice and omission of small words such as and & was. They aren't too numerous and can be easily filled in by the reader but they do interrupt the flow as one reads. The biggest error is where a sentence was attributed to Remus when it was Damokles speaking (see page 107). Overall an excellent read and I recommend it to anyone interested in ancient Mediterranean history as well as mysteries.

I have no idea where the history goes awry here and I find I don't really care. Envisioning Archimedes as a young boy entering adolescence and doing science on the run was totally fun. Whether or not the crown in the basin was the way he discovered how to measure displacement or whether he invented a canon powered by steam is irrelevant to me. I hope there's a sequel, as there are still some bad guys needing cleaning up.

The author does an excellent job of incorporating ancient history into this tale of mystery, adventure and even romance. The story keeps the reader interested, and I highly recommend it for readers of all ages who love historical fiction and mysteries.
