This newer version of the media wall unit is of very poor quality. The veneer was not finished off very well and there are line marks like it had gotten wrinkled in processing yet they didn't bother to stop the machine to fix it.
* The wood underneath is of the same quality of the old unit and the holes all line up well. - No complaints there.
* Assembly is indeed straight-forward but, it is mainly pictures with a little description of what to do underneath. - Acceptable.
* The wooden dowels do not fit snug into the holes so you are going to have to use wood glue - Not acceptable.
* The new hardware (camlocks especially) are inferior. They feel like they are made of aluminum foil. - Not acceptable.
As I mentioned, assembly is straight-forward. The tricky parts are flipping it over to nail down the back panels. Do not apply any pressure to the assembly or it will split at midsection. I used four of the shelves to brace it in the midsection but, it was already to late for me - I had barely touched the midsection and it split. I had to mash every thing back together. I was able to get it all back together and the back panel nailed down but, there are gaps were the two sections join.
I think this is really inexcusable on an item we pay over $120 for that probably costs Atlantic $5 to make in China. The shelves on the new unit are half as thick and shorter than the older model - again just another way a company tries to save a buck. The shelves appear to be strong enough though but, it looks cheap.
My overall opinion is "disappointment". Based on the first one I bought, I thought this would be of the same quality but, it is plain to see that it is not - at all.
Two stars and that is being generous.
A burger company hires an MBA who says, "Our buns have 200 sesame seeds on average. If we reduced by just one, we would hardly save anything per bun but over the millions we sell every year, we'd save tens of thousands of dollars." He's congratulated and the company prides themselves in their wise choice in hiring him.
They then hire another MBA. He says, "Our buns have 199 sesame seeds on average. If we reduce by just one, we would save tens of thousands of dollars each year."
They repeat this until a new MBA says, "Our buns only have three artistically arranged sesame seeds. We seem cheap compared to our competitors. Going to the industry standard of 200 per bun might cost us but we'd make it back in increased sales."
Atlantic hired those MBA guys.
I have two older Atlantic Oskar 1080s. I just bought a new one. To save money, some genius decided shaving the shelves down to half thickness and making them an inch and a half shallower would save the company money. Unfortunately, you now get shelves that are so light as to no longer be stable and sufficiently short that CDs or DVDs that slip a little forward now overhang enough to fall out much more easily. They likely save forty seven cents per set of shelves sold but they've made a far worse product for it.
I loved the old Oskar 1080s and sought them out when my media collection had expanded. The new ones? It's just embarrassing how willing Atlantic were to sacrifice quality to save a tiny bit on materials.
I also rebought so I could match my existing units. From a distance they still do that but, up close, the cheap shelves are obviously different.
Were they still selling the old style 1080s, I'd give them 5 stars and recommend them hands down. The new ones? They're exactly what Amazon calls 3 stars "it's okay."
I talked to a representative of Wayfair, who ships some of these units for Amazon, to check and see if the smaller unit (Atlantic 38435712 Oskar 756 Media Wall Unit P2) was also redesigned, and they actually measured the unit in their warehouse. That unit had the thinner and shallower shelves as well. Good customer service from Wayfair!! Lousy decision by Atlantic in my opinion.
If you're starting fresh, these units may be fine, but I didn't even try to assemble when I saw the pieces. I'm pretty disappointed that I can no longer match my existing shelves and will be searching for the older ones if possible. Heck, I may just build my own.....
It is absolutely perfect for our needs in the space we have for it. Yes, the edges of the titles sticks off the edge a tiny bit, but for someone who has never had the old versions it is perfectly fine. It is pretty sturdy, and I have yet to mount it to the wall and it isn't in any danger of falling over, especially since it is almost totally full. I was also shocked how easy it was to put together from start to finish. I am by no means an expert of putting stuff like this together, but it didn't take no time at all. From start to finish I'd say it took around 30-45 minutes to finish, including nailing the back on it.
So to sum it up, this was just perfect for our needs. If you have never had the older version of this shelf, then do not hesitate picking one of these up. I think you'll be very satisfied. I'll add a picture of ours set up as well, so check that out.

Easy to assemble and looks good. Not terribly sturdy - be very careful when putting together the two halves of the unit. I stripped the screws and had to redrill the holes. Read morePublished 2 months ago by Jay
