Released as a 2CD set on 25 July 2011 in the UK, the import Edsel EDSD2103 breaks down as follows:

I don't pretend to know "Whole Oats" and "Abandoned Luncheonette" very well, as I have never previously owned either record. So my focus here is mainly on the very under-rated and overlooked "War Babies," my personal favorite Hall & Oates record.
"War Babies" has been available as an import CD for quite a few years, but is so compressed and distorted at the higher frequencies that it is not the enjoyable listening experience it should be. Therefore it is not representative of what the album really sounds like (remember - I was first exposed to it on vinyl). Finally those major sonic blunders have been corrected; wrongs have been righted.
This entire package sounds open and spacious and allows you for the first time on CD to experience H&O's early period as it was meant to be heard. Fans of "Abandoned Luncheonette," a favorite of many early devotees of H&O, can finally experience that entire album remastered on CD for the first time.
I openly admit that I am a huge Todd Rundgren fan: both for his work as a recording artist (solo and with Utopia) and as a talented and prolific producer, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. His production work here on "War Babies" is daring, confident, and a bit edgy. And it works magnificently. This album transcends the traditional Hall & Oates formula sound and takes you on a unique journey all its own.
Here is a wonderful ROCK record the likes of which H&O have never come close to duplicating.Read more ›
The not so good news: War Babies sounds just like the 1998 German Digipak Import that I have (although the treble is reduced slightly). I don't think it is remastered although it sounds ok. More importantly, the segue between the first 2 tracks is not there... Can't Stop The Music stops abruptly!
Sadly too, the three No Goodbyes tracks are in MONO! I have the Japanese press of the No Goodbyes CD from many years ago and those tracks are in STEREO. More recently too, the 1996 Atlantic Collection CD compilation and the Do What You Want Box Set have 2 of the 3 tracks each and they are all in STEREO. What gives?
I was in Japan recently (Oct 2011) and I saw SHM-CD versions of Whole Oats and Abandoned Luncheonette. I didn't get them as War Babies was not pressed in SHM-CD. My hunch is that the Japanese only pressed those 2 CDs as they were remastered whereas War Babies wasn't - trust the Japanese and their quality control.
Overall, the compilation is a hit and miss affair. I recommend it for the remastered tracks and the excellent booklet with extensive liner notes and lyrics to all the songs! Personally, I am disappointed because I think War Babies and the 3 No Goodbyes tracks deserve to be heard in their full glory.
The Japanese have finally released the 3 Atlantic albums (excl.Read more ›
