Editorial Reviews

Special Packaging Info: 9 CDs (168 tracks) plus a 7 inch 45 rpm record of Atlantic Records first major hit, Stick McGee's 'Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-Oh-Dee' and its b-side. Also includes 1 DVD: The PBS Documentary 'The House That Ahmet Built.' (DVD Run-Time: 115 Minutes). The Atlantic Time Capsule was created in the same spirit that infused the label's very beginnings. Just as the company's founders, to quote Ahmet, 'wanted to make the kind of records that we would want to buy,' we set out to assemble a collection that would tell a story that we would want to hear. From the onset, the idea was to present Atlantic Records 'from the inside.' The collection was compiled by a small group of passionate Atlantic staffers, who drew on rarely seen material from the company's archives, Ahmet's personal papers, and the work of staff photographers through the years.
This unique package design contains a full color 140 page book filled with unseen 'from the inside' images as well as a collection of reproduced memorabilia including: a backstage pass, handbills, posters, ticket stubs and other vintage swag. Each set is completed by an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.

Record label box sets have become popular in recent years, with the release of Motown's "The Complete #1's" and "Revolutions in Sound" from Warner Bros. Now, Atlantic Records has put out a retrospective of their 60 years of music making. Surprisingly, this collection has received little press or coverage, which is a shame, because this collection is a must-buy.

The collection features 9 music CDs, covering 60 years of Atlantic recordings. During its inception, Atlantic Records was mostly an R&B and jazz record label, so you will get a fair sampling of songs by John Coltrane, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, The Coasters, and The Drifters, along with pop hits by Bobby Darin. The label's music expanded in the late '60s and early '70s, and it gradually introduced rock and progressive rock, so by disc three, you will hear the Allman Brothers Band, Genesis and of course, Led Zeppelin, alongside the soul hits. There are also a few songs from Aretha Franklin during her late '60s ascension to music royalty, including her iconic "Respect."

The '70s are represented by rock (more Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton), soul (more Franklin, The Spinners), blue-eyed soul (Hall & Oates), disco/funk (Bee Gees, Chic, Sister Sledge). Like most record labels in the '80s, Atlantic's sound became slicker, but thankfully Atlantic released several songs in the '80s that hold up well, particularly Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen" and INXS' "Need You Tonight."

Like most compilations of this nature, there is a natural decline as the music hits the '90s, but Atlantic has released some nuggets in the past few years, including Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy.

This is a fine collection. I don't have much to add on the overall quality beyond others have already said.

Good news: There is one additional track - track 20 - on disc 9. It is not listed on the sleeve for disc 9, and is not listed in the Amazon track listing. This track is the fine song "Mess Around" by Ray Charles. It IS listed on the Rhino Web site track listing.

The songs on the 9-disc collection are presented in almost the order they were released, with the exception of Mess Around, which was released in 1953, but inexplicably is placed at the end of the last disc, which should have the very latest releases.

It's obvious that this masterful box set was done with a lot of love. Spanning over 60 years of a catalog that's as rich as Atlantic's is no easy task, but the makers of this glorious box set have been able to conquer that task. It's an A++ project all the way through.

The remastering is excellent and so are the tracks they selected. I wish they had emphasized more of the artists from the 50s through the 80s and let one disc do the the 90s and 00s.
