Tell your own fantastic tales of brave heroes and daring adventure!
Once Upon a Time is the award-winning storytelling card game that encourages creativity and collaborative play. One player is the Storyteller, and begins telling a story using the fairytale elements on her Story cards, guiding the plot toward her Ending Card. The other players use their own cards to interrupt her and become the new Storyteller. The winner is the first player to use all her Story Cards and play her Ending Card. The object of the game, though, isn't just to win, but to have fun telling a story together.
The 3rd Edition features:
New Artwork: Entirely new artwork by fantasy artist extraordinaire Omar Rayyan.
Revised Cardlist: A re-worked cardlist designed to make play smooth and easy.
Redesigned Box: A larger box with new graphic design and "book-like" front flap.
Simplified Rulesheet: A simplified rules sheet designed to bring new players quickly into the game.

For anyone new to the game, "Once Upon A Time" is played by a group of players who are trying to reach an ending, given to them on a card at the beginning of the game, while playing through their hands of characters, items, events, aspects, and places. 'Play' in "Once Upon A Time" consists of telling a story, and the amusement of the players trying to direct the story in different directions as they pass and interrupt each other with the cards in their hands is what makes the game fun. "Once Upon A Time" is very creative, friendly, fast-paced fun.
The game's maker, Atlas Games, has a PDF of the rules & the card list available at their website: [...]
I found these helpful in making an informed decision about purchasing the game. The PDF of the rules is a digital version of the printed rules you will receive in the box, along with three plastic wrapped decks containing the three 55 card sets described in the card list. These plastic wrapped decks will be "free" in the box, which contains no bracketing to store the cards. (I am using three plastic snack bags to keep the cards from jumbling in the box; you will have to find a parallel solution.)
This version of the game includes some cards from the 2nd edition's expansion for a richer play experience. However, it does *not* include blank cards, like earlier editions did, this is why I cannot give the third edition five stars. Adding blank cards really spices up the game, and not including them seems like a downgrade from prior editions. The outwardly nice box also really needs an insert for card storage. Nonetheless, I would heartily recommend "Once Upon A Time" to anyone who has friends or family with a creative streak.
I've reviewed previous versions of the game, so I'll start with a comparison of versions. The art is very good in both versions: 2nd has bolder art, and the 3rd is softer with more emphasis on color than line, more storybookish. The card layout is much better in the 3rd edition, with the card type and name in the upper corners. These cards are easier to play with.
Here are the changes to the main decks, listing the cards that were replaced or changed in the new edition. I approve of all of these changes. Some of them make the game more friendly. or more in tune to fairy tales.
Character 2nd: Bird, Old man, Old woman, Sheperdess
Character 3rd: Dragon, Guard, Old person
Event 2nd: A trap, Dream
Event 3rd: Found, Imprisoned, Lost, Making mischief, Returned, Sleeping, This comes alive
Item 2nd: Boat
Item 3rd: A trap, A well, Cauldron, Clothes, Stairs, Wall
Place 2nd: At sea, Chapel, Island, Prison, Stairs, Town
Place 3rd: Church, City, Dungeon, Garden, In the sky, Swamp
Aspect 2nd: Evil, Insane, Lost, Sleeping, Stupid, This animal can talk, This item can talk
Aspect 3rd: Brave, Crazy, Foolish, Healed, Sad, This can talk, Wicked
The second edition had 23 ending cards, the 3rd edition has 51 ending cards (such as "Which meant they would become king and queen in the course of time"). The box looks much nicer, but it's also about three times larger than it needs to be, which makes the game less portable. If you have a previous edition, these are all factors to think about when considering whether to upgrade.
I recommend all editions of this game. The cards are better in the 3rd edition, but the box is unnecessarily huge, and thus won't be brought to as many conventions.
Player 1: "...and the castle burned down, with the evil queen trapped inside. As the sun rose the next day, the villagers..."
Player 2: "Wait!" (plays MORNING card to steal control) "...as the sun rose the next day, the town was shocked to see the queen standing, quite alive, in the middle of the town square. She cackled, 'You foolish peasants! Thanks to my magical spell, I...' "
Player 3: "Stop!" (plays MAGIC card to steal control) "...she says, 'Thanks to the magical spell which was cast on me as a child, destroying my body actually freed my true form.' And with that, you realize that she is gradually changing into a young princess..."
I bought all the sets, but recommend this set and the 'create your own' set. I also use the kindle book that helps you to write stories, as it suggests some standard plot twists to get people started being creative.
