Take a Look Inside the Atlas of the World [Click on Images to Enlarge]

The Atlas of the World
Iceland: This winter image, captured in January, shows Iceland cloaked in snow, covering its four permanent ice caps. Due to its position on a fault line, Iceland also experiences high levels of volcanic activity, with much of the land covered in lava flows.
The Atlas of the World
The River Thames: A satellite view of the river as it snakes from Chelsea Bridge in the west to Tower Bridge in the east. Despite a population of more than 8 million, London boasts many parks and open spaces around its city center, visible in this image.
The Atlas of the World
The Congo River: An image of the river where it splits to form Malebo Pool on its journey to the Atlantic Ocean. The Congo River is the second longest in Africa, after the Nile, and is the world’s deepest river with recorded depths of over 750 feet.
The Atlas of the World
Lima, Peru: Peru’s largest city and its capital, Lima was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish. Some believe its population of just under 9 million could grow to 10 million by 2015.
The Atlas of the World
London City Map [PDF]: City maps, like this one of London, make it easy to identify key destinations--like the site of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding, Westminster Abbey.
The Atlas of the World
South Sudan: South Sudan officially became an independent state on July 9, 2011. On July 14, it became a member state of the United Nations and joined the African Union two weeks later.

I had been quite happy with a DK Atlas for several years but this year my 15 year old daughter has a lot of map work in her history class and I was thrilled to find this altas. The maps fill the entire page - no extraneous (though often interesting) blurbs of information in the DK style - just the maps. Hence the maps are bigger and you can see more detail.

Our family has been looking for a great atlas for a long time now, and I think we've found it. The maps are clear and we like the information provided. We spend a lot of time looking at it together.

This is the sixth atlas in my library which includes Britannica's Atlas and Hammond's Medallion, both of them quality publications in their own right. However there is no doubt in my mind that Oxford's eighteenth edition Atlas of the World is an exceptional publication that exceeds all my expectations. I use it frequently each week, to track world news events and while reading reference type literature relating to travel and geography.

All maps are easy to locate and navigate; the Gazetteer of the Nations and the satellite images of Earth are second to none. There is no need to say that I am fully satisfied with my new atlas.

The atlas exceeded my expectation! I am a retired geographer who loves maps and atlases. I am spending a little time each day reading and reveling in a page or two of maps. I especially enjoy re-visiting places where I have traveled to see how times have changed in those areas.

A beautiful book: fabulous photos; up to date information, even the Christchurch, New Zealand, earthquakes over the last year; it seems to cover all aspects of our universe. It was a present for my husband, & we are both very pleased with it.

For those of you who don't like the sterile appearance of Google Maps and the endless zooming and shifting to get to the location you want, The Oxford Atlas is the one for you. Using the reference maps inside the covers, I can get to any location in less than a minute.
This Atlas is not an aerial photo display but rather a stunning colour representation of countries and regions drawn in the traditional way with mountains that look like mountains and valleys that look like valleys.
A genuine piece of artwork printed in Malaysia on quality thick bond paper. A joy to behold.

Solid atlas. I tend to buy atlases every 10 years or so to get a sense of the changes in economies, demographics and names of the nations of the world. Over the years I have been very pleased with the Oxford atlas. This atlas provides sufficient detail on most of the world. There are a few island groups in the vicinity of the Mediterranean and the general pacific area that have less detail. There level of detail on the continents and major islands is great.

I bought this as a gift for my 93 year friend. It has large fonts, lots of pictures. Just one thing - it is very heavy. We set it up on her dining room table and she can search throughout the atlas at her leisure.
