Product Description
Gamera, the giant prehistoric turtle, sworn to protect the Earth, follows two boys to a hostile planet where brain-eating aliens have taken them prisoner. Gamera battles with Guiron, a giant knife-faced monster, in a struggle to save the kids. The boys discover the aliens' plan to conquer Earth, which compels them to rouse Gamera to a final deadly battle with the space monster.
Attack of the Monsters, originally released as Gamera Tai Daikaiju Giron, has long been a fan favorite and is widely considered the best entry in the series. The schoolboys' bravery, Guiron's fierceness, and Gamera's daring rescue make for a memorable, exciting kaiju film.

Reliving my youth with collections of movies from the Seventies and Eighties has generally been a blast, and with the magic of the internet, youtube and dvd and blue ray, we can have those days again. Growing up I was always a fan of the Japanese monster genre (especially Godzilla films), and perhaps "Attack of the Monsters" plays a big part of that reason. For this particular film, you'll have to abandon disbelief and leave all common sense at the door. It may also help to try and view it with the mind of a nine year old, since that seems to have been their intended audience. If you can't do that, than have a few beers invite a few friends, and just do a MSTK3 on it.
Gamera is the monster hero in this one; that retro rocket flying turtle that blasts through space with blue flame jetting out his leg holes is back, and he's up against a pretty tough customer in this one - the ever frightening, knife-headed Guiron! Dun-dun-dun! There's also a slicked up, silver version of Rodan named Gyaos in this one who fires perhaps the most lethal laser attack in all of the Giant Monster movie!!! Still, my favorite has to be Guiron in this one, whose appearance is anything but menacing - unless you're nine years old -- or drunk. Seeing him for the first time reminded me of the candy gram shark on those early "Saturday Night Live" bits. For sheer lunacy, there's nothing better than Gamera's defeat of Guiron as he lands nose down in the dirt. Despite his awkward costume design, and the crazy flying discs, he proves to be an interesting, if not vicious monster, and does quite a bloody job on our hero.
Most of the action takes place on 'Terra', a planet directly opposite the Earth on the other side of the sun. Terra's inhabitants have been reduced to a pair of women who for some reason aren't even listed in the film's credits. One of their names sounded very similar to Barbarella, while the other came across as something like Ploda. Both are nice eye candy, but, beneath their silk capelets and go-go boots, they had hearts steeled in evil.
The human heroes are two boys: Akio and his bumbling American friend Tom. Unfortunately, Akio's sister Tomoko was left behind as the boys commandeered an alien space craft, knowing just which buttons to push and how to maneuver their way to Terra. Of course Gamera helped them out owing to his reputation for helping children in distress.
Somehow, "Attack of the Monsters" conjures up a much larger mental picture of havoc and destruction perpetrated against a hapless Japanese city than what is actually presented here in the film, as the creatures go at it one on one on the remote planet of Terra instead of en masse causing as much damage as possible back here on Earth. But don't let that discourage you, in it's own way it's a fun film that can be just as enjoyable now as it was thirty years ago; but in a much different way.
For Gamera fans, the movie is a must to own. And whether you are sitting down to watch it for the first time, or to reclaim some lost memory of yesteryear, I think you will enjoy this film in either case. Just don't be like the rest of today's vidiots, and complain about the silly things like: special effects, musical score and the like... enjoy it for what it is; good, clean fun from a more enjoyable time in our history.
That said, I really enjoy this 4th Gamera movie. Sure, it's a kiddie movie, but it's still enjoyable to watch as an adult. I grew up on these films, and it's great to now introduce my kids to all these fantastic flicks; Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan and Gamera never fail to entertain.
In this entry Gamera sets out to rescue two young boys who have been kidnapped by two evil sister aliens who want to eat the children's brains and by doing so, they will somehow conquer Earth. Not quite sure how that plan would work for them???? Anyway Gamera flies to this distant world only to meet up with one of his fiercest rivals...Guiron. Guiron is a pretty nasty beastie, walking on all fours, with a huge Ginsu knife for a head, and the ability to launch razor sharp throwing stars at his enemies, he poses quite a threat to our heroic turtle.
This is a fun movie, the monster costumes seem to have been done on rather quickly on a small budget, and the micro-models of the alien world and the spaceship are pretty cheezy.....but that is half the fun. This film was also used as an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (twice...actually if you count the shows public access season).

But keep in mind this isn't your typical factory DVD, it's someone's well made home project with a burning studio app.
They did a decent job on the label and case insert, though their paper is thinner than a factory DVD and doesn't state typical info such as rating and language.
I would have rated this 5 stars, but the fact is I thought i was paying for a factory DVD, not someone's burning suite project.
What bothers me is being a burnt movie I'm not sure it's even legal though given the age of the movie it probably is.
