Editorial Reviews

On the morning of December 7, 1941, a surprise attack by Japanese naval aviation against the American held island of Oahu and Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into World War II. The story told here details one of the most momentous events in American history and a crucial turning point in the 20th century. Most importantly, it is a story of the people who were there, told through eyewitness accounts of American and Japanese veterans, some of whose stories have never been told. This is a story of perseverance and heroism in the face of overwhelming odds. This is the story of Pearl Harbor. December 7th, produced on behalf of the U.S. government and directed by acclaimed cinematographer Gregg Toland, is a dramatization of the events that precipitated the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Framed as a debate between Walter Huston's Uncle Sam and Harry Davenport's Mr. C (that's "C" for "Conscience") the film attempts to determine who was to blame. Though December 7th is more balanced than most propaganda films of the time, even suggesting that the United States should have been better prepared, it is still an indictment of Japanese-Hawaiians and the alleged role they may have played.

I have had the pleasure of purchasing several of these documentary series' including "The Great War: WWI," "The Forgotten War: Korea," and "D-Day Code Name: Overlord," by far this set is the most impressive of the lot. The set is wonderfully comprehensive with actual interviews with Japanese pilots and American sailors eyewitnesses and participants who managed to survive that fateful day. Extensive newsreel footage, as well as analysis by military historians explain the reasons why Japan decided to attack the naval base--a decision the Imperial Navy, we learn, would later regret. A second disc details the not often seen footage from recent salvage efforts, what exactly went wrong, and including the hows and whys the U.S. should have been better prepared to meet the Japanese attack. The documentary also analyzes the alleged role Japanese-Hawaiians may have played on the attack as well as the fateful mistakes that were made at every command level from the battlelines to the White House itself. Provoking as many questions as it attempts to answer, this set will shed new light on one of America's darkest days. Of course, this is nowhere in the league of say, "World at War" or Ken Burns' upcoming opus "The War," but for the modest outlay (I purchased mine at Ross-Dress for Less for $4.99) well worth watching.

This documentary provides the viewer with information that shows the multitude of events that led up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. It also shows the aftermath and how America reacted. Actual film footage & still photos are included as well as interviews with survivors.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who would like to learn more about this terrible day in our history.

I thoroughly enjoyed this two set video series concerning the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. It helped me to more clearly understand how the Japanese military was able to carry out the plans set in motion a few years earlier. I had not realized that American intelligence was unaware of its ability to launch torpedoes from airplanes. This may have made the ultimate difference. And no, Franklin D. Roosevelt did not let the Japanese successfully attack our installations on Pearl Harbor simply to get the United States into the war. The consensus opinion was that Hirohito's forces would pick an easier target. I am sure that the vast majority of us living today would have committed the same mistake had we been in their shoes.

The final hour of this series involves a fictional discussion between Uncle Sam and History. I found it interesting how the participants went out of their way to assert that few Japanese-Americans were disloyal to their country. Their patriotism was repeatedly emphasized.

I purchased this for my young daughter after we returned from a trip to Hawaii. It helped her to understand what happened in Pearl Harbor and helped her to connect and make sense of what she saw when we visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial. It's very informative and provides a lot of pictoral and video footage that really helps with understanding the history of the event. I would recommend to history buffs, teachers of American History, or anyone interested in understanding The United State's role in World War II and the reasons our nation was drawn into this conflict.

I am using this film in school as a follow up to reading a novel about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The graphic scenes of war are harsh - it's war - and deepen empathy for what our Veteran's and the civilians of Oahu were subjected to on the day of the bombing and its aftermath.

This DVD set is great upon seeing color film of the attack on Pearl Harbor. After serving five years in the navy I saw the Arizona in person and it still makes me cry. To see her still leaking oil and seeing the very spot were she will rest until she falls apart. It was very helpful in completing my ARIZONA BATTLESHIP MODEL in the correct color as she was when she exploded, at least within reason. Horrifying and fascinating- all at once. Corey

The DVD is very informative, it covers a decent amount of information. Not the best out there though. It was a little hard to understand the narrator, and it doesn't have subtitles. That's why it gets 3 stars.
