This e-book covers a lot of breadth in areas such as identifying the types of attitudes that lead to stress and those that improve coping skills. I was led into some useful self-reflection and learned quite a few memorable ideas. For example: when a woman is whining she wants to be comforted, when a man whines he wants encouragement. This book is loaded with interesting little insights like that drawn from the author's extensive training and counseling experience. I also like that he frequently quotes ancient spiritual and wisdom literature from various traditions with emphasis on Judeo-Christian. Though the author draws on various sources, the bulk of the information seems to be based on his experience as a REBT practitioner.
I like the book overall and recommend it, but there is one thing to be aware of before purchasing. The material in the book is terse, rules and lists mostly. The author explains the book is a combination of counseling material he has presented from slides for years to other counselors as well as everyday advice he gives in his counseling sessions. There are very few stories or concrete examples. Instead you are given condensed principles and lists. These are loaded with valuable insights and experience, but it is more akin to reading a manual than a carefully authored book. I happen to like this as a supplement to other reading I am doing on REBT (Albert Ellis), but I picked up the REBT book after this one, because I needed some more examples from everyday life, not just principles. There is a ton of material in this book and it is approached methodically which means it can be dry reading. For example in one section (the most tedious) there are combinations of attitudes that lead to various results. Each combination or topic is explored briefly and then the next slghtly different topic comes along.
The author recommends reading the book three times to really benefit. That is honest and good advice to the reader. I'm not sure I'll make three complete readings (lack of patience/other reading to do), but I do find myself re-reading parts of it because it is so insightful.
I like this book and it has helped me. The interested reader looking for substance over style can gain much here. A more casual reader may not get far because of the terse style of presentation.
