Great start, but....

Wow that was bad. It started decent enough, especially for a Russian movie that has been over dubbed for the American market, but boy, it went downhill shortly after starting. The first couple of scenes were decent and graphics were good. We were thinking this might be an alright flick. We were wrong. The story just meandered aimlessly for over an hour and them bam, a weird finish. I would not recommend this movie.

This is a unique movie from Russia, although the plot has been observed many times before. I found similarities with the Day The Earth Stood Still, Starman, and a few others from the '50s. When you make the aliens similar to humans, you lose a great deal of science fiction. A good example is the epic horror film, The Thing, with Kurt Russell, with the alien being a non-human entity that mimics humans. The theme is one of love and compassion, with the alien living in a world without death and a clean environment, after coming to earth when their spaceship malfunctions. Earth is forbidden for them to visit for reasons that were spelled out at the end of the movie, just like in the movie, The Day The Earth Stood Still. We see the younger generation interacting with social media, meeting to protest, and dancing to popular Russian Rap. I can't forget the fight scene in the movie, District Nine, which is similar to the fight scene at the end of the movie. Overall, it was a little too long, I've seen most of this before, but it was unique coming to from Russia. I did see Lays potato chips, Philips medical monitors, and a Range Rover. So Russia is changing as well.

This was not expected. Picture, sound, acting, screenplay, special effects, english overdub, and subtitles were all excellent. There is a slight tinge here and there of "The day the earth stood still", but not enough to tarnish this excellent story. The actors were all so good it was not even annoying that their russian speaking mouths did not match the sound of the english overdub. Amazon does not have it, but I am trying to find the soundtrack because it also, was excellent. There was not a single thing that looked cheap or not up to date technically about this movie. This one is definitely going top shelf in my sf collection which consists of hundreds of movies. It's an "Amazon's Choice" for a reason. Get it!

Interesting sci-fi film concept but poorly executed

While it is interesting to see a science fiction film from Russia, the novelty factor can’t make up for all the negatives in the film. The negatives are (1) Atrocious scripted dialogue, (2) mediocre acting, (3) less then compelling characters that are really hard to like, (4) a not to believable alien that acts anything but intelligent, (5) extremely poor dubbing that reminds me of 1950s/1960s dubbed foreign films. On the positive side it takes place in Russia, uses all Russian military equipment and the special effects are first rate. The Blu-Ray is very good, and has great sound, and it works on my American Sony Blu-Ray player with no problems. With a better script and better actors this could have been a much better film. I think in time, as with China, the Russian film production industry will mature and create science fiction films on par with anything made in either America or Europe. I look forward to seeing more from them in the coming years.

Disappointed in Amazon

So, Amazon had nothing to do with the trailer. Gotta wonder. Amazon put in line for 1st recommendation based on my viewing? IT was horrible. The trailer, if you are not watching too closely, looks like it could be a blockbuster. The movie itself, a disaster. Really bad translated sub titles. Bad plot, just bad.

Good movie at most, looks and feels like a 3rd world country production but the idea is very good if only it wasn't too unbelievable that a third world military could do this to an ET space craft that traveled possibly light years to get here. Also the Russian government had its politics in this movie by the proclamation in the beginning of the film that there is no God. This is what a movie would look like if they continued making movies after the infrastructure fell. Bad actors real bad I mean baaaaad!
