I bought the Attwood hoist system after an extensive internet review (including one warning that the screws provided are not sufficient). It is probably the best "complete" system out there, but find the YouTube video showing how to set it up (I believe the video may be for a competitor's product) - the written directions are impossible to follow. And purchase your own woodscrews: one of the screws they sent sheared when I was screwing it in (despite a pilot hole) and another sheared when I tried to hoist my canoe. I don't mind the cost of 8 lag bolts but don't appreciate having to make an unplanned trip to the hardware store or nearly bouncing my canoe off of the garage floor.

My garage roof beams are exposed so the hoist was super easy to install. Lock mechanism works maybe a little too well, but better that than not working. My yak weighs around 50 lbs with my bits in it and the hoist manages this with ease, even for an aging fisherman.
The straps are pretty much a waste of time for me as I wanted the yak as high as possible, using the straps has it hang around 2 feet lower than I wanted. No worries though, the hooks on the hoist can turn 360 and will pretty much hook on to any handle or hook-able surface.
I would recommend to others.....similar hoists in the store were about $12 more.

I bought this hoist system for my 3rd boat and mounted it on the ceiling of my garage. Since the joists in my garage run perpendicular to the direction I need to mount the hoist, I first installed 2 x 6 cleats with lag bolts to the joists (each cleat spans and is bolted to 3 joists to ensure they're secure) , then bolted the hoist to the 2 x 6 cleats. Installation is fairly straight forward. I'd give it 5 stars, except the diagram for routing the hoist rope is pretty lacking in directions and detail. If I didn't already have one mounted to the ceiling, I'm sure I would have been very frustrated trying to figure out how to route the rope properly through the hoist mechanism.

The hoist system worked as I expected. I used it to hold my Thule carriers to the top of the garage. I just drive the car in, put the racks on, and hoist the carriers on top of the car. No more carrying the carriers on my head.

Like :

Very thoughtful in the design to ease installation. Remember installing something on the ceiling is extremely challenge, risk and tiring.
Fittings precision in the assembly is world class, not too loose or tight. Holes are line up where and when I expected it to be.

Room for improvement :

I agree with the other reviewer about the rope property, very easy worn down. Even if my finger is a bit rough after the installation, my finger will pull off strands on the rope face.

I plan to spend about $10 on 5/16" braided rope from H-Depot to replace mine.

Recommendation :

Highly.

Watch out when comparing pricing :

Some designs use single rope system to daisy chain up two of hook-pulleys. This provides mechanical advantage of 4:1 no question in that but the downside is that your bike will be accend with the lighter (front or back) end first and settled closer to the ceiling than the opposite end. It is no big issue but you have to correct that each time during and after hoisting. Too late to correct when it is against the ceiling. So how to make our selection? Consider double rope system, one rope on each hook-pulley. Hoist your bike as if we are hoisting our window blind, engage and pull both ropes at once in equal amount your bike will be suspended nicely horizontal, during and end of hoist.

The instructions were good and it installed with out issue. I gave it only 3 stars because the straps are useless . They do not adjust and are way to long. I use the straps from my JayLow rack instead. They can be put on tight so the boat does'nt slip out and fall.I also put an old bunjee cord between the hooks to prevent this. My second beef is with the rope lock. The ropes must be pulled straight down to release the lock and lower the boat, not a big deal unless the boat is raised to the ceiling and prevents the ropes from being pulled straight down. So I have to get my step ladder out and reach over the boat to lower it. Other then that it works well and for the price I can live with it.

1. Toss the lag bolts in the trash after buying real ones at the hardware store. Two broke before adequately being tightened. It should be very difficult to break a bolt of that size! 2. The straps are not adjustable, but you can tie a knot in them to shorten them effectively. 3. While you are buying those better lag bolts, buy a lag screw style J hook rather than use the angled metal to anchor the rope end. Tie couple of loops in the extended rope for hand holds to make lifting easier. The leverage is not really that great on this system, so do not expect to lift a kayak with ease if you weigh less than 150, but it is doable. 4. If you have 8 ft ceilings, then you will not be lifting the boat very high at all. The bracketry, hooks, and slack in the straps (even when knotted) prevent a high lift. Expect the bottom of a SOT kayak to be around 6 feet (depending on thickness of course). This installation allowed it to barely clear the storage rack on a Jeep Cherokee (standard suspension) with an 8 ft garage ceiling. 5. It would be possible to gain a few more inches by removing the hooks (or flip them upside down and secure) so that you could attach the strap higher (directly under the pulley). 6. Directions are okay, just read them a time or two while looking at the box of parts and you should be okay.
