The hand held optional remote accessory gives you total flexibility for fishing boats and pontoons that use a compatible wireless motor. Up to four remote control devices can be used with each Wireless Series Trolling Motor. The Wireless Hand-held Remote uses the same software logic as the Wireless Foot Pedal with on/off, right/left and faster/slower commands. The Hand-held Remote is powered by a 3-volt battery that will last 20 continuous hours. The remote only uses power when sending commands so that your battery lasts between 500 and 600 hours of fishing.

Interesting discovery (con?) - Even with the unit turned off (prop not moving) and in a stowed position the unit will respond to the controls from the handheld remote. With the foot control you are never going to accidentally press a button. This is MUCH easier with the fob. I had the fob in my boat bag when I realized that the unit was trying to turn (in stowed position) and I discovered that a button was being pressed on the fob inside the bag. For safety you should unplug the trolling motor when you are underway, the fob is so much more responsive you can accidentally activate the unit when you aren't expecting it.
For future updates to the system Motorguide should add a safety switch that deactivates the unit when it's in the stowed position.
