Audéo Perfect Fit Earphones offer a crystal clear, natural sound and exceptional fit that ensures your earphones stay in so you continuously enjoy your music. Designed by Phonak, the world's leading hearing systems experts based in Switzerland, Audéo Perfect Fit Earphones reflect 60+ years experience of building high-quality hearing and audio products. With an "unparalleled knowledge of the human ear," Phonak engineers produced the earphones with a distinctive sound and over-the-fit that address the short-comings of most earbuds. Three different sets of silicone earpieces, one pair of Comply foam earplugs and a pair oft unique ear guides give you multiple options to find a fit for long-lasting comfort. In addition, the earphones come with six sets of special audio filters that let you customize the frequency response to your taste. As for sound quality, the frequency response is quite flat. No coloring whatsoever. Those are probably the only headphones I have tried that "sounded" comfortable. No band stands out and you can hear details you probably won't hear using other headphones at the same price range.
The quality of bass response is excellent. You can hear the whole frequency range but many might prefer to fiddle around with the EQ and increase bass a bit. There is also the supplied set of audio filters (two types are included: one for increased high/mid range and one for increased low range response). I find the default gray (for high/mid) with a slight increase in EQ bass level suit my preference very well and haven't tried the black ones yet.
I didn't need any amp and I don't think I would need any with my walkman phone.
The package comes with a carrying case, 3 pairs of rubber tips, 1 pair of foam tips, a cleaning tool and 4 pairs of audio filters.
I would have preferred the wires to be of a higher quality (on the headphone side) but I would guess replacing the wires is possible since the headphones can be disassembled.
My preference is for the black sound filters (included with the headphones), which deemphasize a little of the midband to bring up the bass and treble. I haven't found any music that doesn't sound great through these, and I've got it all (classical, jazz, latin, electronica, dance, dream-pop, indie rock, hip-hop, r&b...you name it, it's gone through the Audeos and sounded beautiful).
If you're a bass-lover, and have to get that boom-boom pow in all your music, try something from Klipsch or Denon. But if you want to hear what the music was recorded to sound like, then go for these. At $150.00, they are a steal.
The Perfect Fit Earphones (PFEs) deliver excellent mids and highs, and plenty of tight, accurate bass. No real weakness in my view. Very comfy too. Sometimes, they do seem a bit underpowered, in that they need a headphone amp to generate enough volume with 1-2 of my players (the Sansa Clip and Zune80), but others who own them don't have the same issue. I use a cheap amp on the go, made in China (called a FiiO E5). Google it if interested.
Anyway, if you own an iPod Touch or iPhone, the PFEs with the mic are great as well. I own the Touch 2G. Plenty of volume.
Best of all, Phonak gives U.S. and Canadian buyers a 14-day MBG. You can't lose. If you want the max sound quality from your player, this is the ticket. They also have filters that can change the focus from mids/highs (gray) to bass (black). I favor the latter, but sometimes switch to the former. You can EQ the bass a bit for the gray sleeves.
Only warning: If your music is ripped at low bitrates (below 192k), you may have to do some re-ripping, cause the PFEs are not forgiving for lousy rips.
Update. I recently added a pair of Sennheiser IE8s to my collection, and so far, they are pretty impressive. However, I still reach for the PFEs, but mainly when using a new amp I bought, the iBasso T4, which really brings out the best in the Phonaks.
As a result, I now almost always use the gray filters, amped, with Comply foamies for best SQ.
