Audeze LCD-3 Planar Magnetic Headphones with Leather Earpads and Travel Case
Audeze started in 2008 in a garage (of course!) when its founders came across a revolutionary flexible circuit material developed for NASA. Realizing this could be a great advance in planar magnetic technology, they first started to make pro audio PA speakers, but dropped this project and started making headphones – the LCD-1.
Taking this first headphone to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, it was a tremendous hit, and that success launched the company. Hanging on that garage wall was the 2001 Space Odyssey poster, and that inspired the company’s name. The founders wanted a name that had something to do with a “journey through audio,” so Odyssey would be perfect, and that’s how the name Audeze (pronounced “odyssey”) was born.
AUDEZE'S PLANAR MAGNETIC TECHNOLOGY
Acoustically engineered for accuracy
Audeze’s innovative planar magnetic technology delivers clear and accurate sound that reveals everything on the recording.
Diaphragms thinner than a human hair
We use space-age materials in an ultra thin diaphragm four times larger than typical headphones for fast response times, dramatically reduced distortion, higher resolution and improved imaging.
Near zero distortion
Double-sided magnet arrays delivers a uniform driving force across the entire diaphragm for near zero distortion.
Fluxor Magnet Arrays
Patented Fluxor Magnet Arrays focus the magnetic flux nearly doubling the power driving the diaphragm for even lower distortion and greater accuracy.
Patented Fazor Elements guide internal headphone soundwaves to avoid resonance for a more accurate waveform.
More on the LCD-3 Headphones
The LCD-3 Headphones
The LCD-3 is a time machine that puts you in the room with your favorite artists and musicians. It’s luxuriously spacious, with powerful bass, a rich and engaging midrange, and a top-end that draws you into the music. Its rich, vibrant sound has scale and authority derived from a deep, ambient soundstage with exciting detail and dynamics. The LCD-3 was said to be the best in the world and its natural timbre, especially through the midrange, was described as a thing of beauty.
Industrial Design by AudezeYou’ll be proud of how the LCD-3 looks and sounds. It’s imbued with sophisticated looks and beautiful hand-made rings. The quality of the entire structure provides years of trouble-free listening. Our cutting-edge designs and circuit technologies have created an astonishingly beautiful sounding headphone.
Engineered and Handcrafted in Audeze's California Factory
The LCD-3 is thoroughly engineered for long-term comfort and spacious, realistic sound. We closely match our planar transducers, and match our beautiful factory-made wood rings by grain and color. We use tropical West African Zebrano hardwood -- known as Zebra wood -- not listed in the CITES Appendices. We also match the earpads by leather texture and color. You can choose lambskin leather or Microsuede headbands and earcups that are filled with carefully selected foam for best sound and comfort during long listening sessions. Pair the LCD-3 with a quality headphone amplifier or integrated amp for best sound.
Top Customer Reviews
They bring new life to music that I thought I knew.
Some people find them heavy but I enjoy listening to them for hours on end with no fatigue.
I can't say how they compare to other headphones in the same price bracket, but I'm certainly very happy that I bought them.
That said, my Nexus 6P phone cannot play the LCD3 very loud and sound deteriorates if I do not use the HA-2, which is a pain. It's a pain having a phone connected to the HA-2 which is like having a string of two phones. I commute daily on public transportation. The PSB is still my headphones of choice for commuting. It doesn't require the HA-2, has it's own amp (but no DAC), and sound cancellation -- features the LCD3 lacks.
I have 20 year old Legacy Focus speakers. They were $6K at the time and are $10K now. My biggest disappointment with the LCD3 is that I prefer the sound of my Focus speakers over the LCD3. I expected the LCD3 to be superior. Maybe I'm used to the Focus speakers. And maybe I need to get a headphone DAC/Amp that's better than the HA-2. Next Christmas I plan to upgrade the headphone amp.
Bottomline is that I'm pleased with the purchase. This is intended to be the last headphones I ever buy. But I wouldn't spend this kind of money unless you have an excellent DAC/Amp to drive them. In addition, they are to be used at home, and you'll need different headphones for commuting.
Comfort and fit these are not that bad. They can be awkward and clumsy, for the sensitive hobbyist maybe not so great. I'm not so sure what other option you might have if you like warm headphones for the genres I described above. The LCD-3 is in a class of its own like the HD800 and Beyer T1. Amps to stay from are the HiFiMan ef6 Denon Marantz. Any amp with a dc transformer is just not going to get the job done and looks novice.
Warranty while the company is in business is transferrable and is based on date of purchased. I was surprised by that. I actually find the LCD-2 for my tastes and cost is a better option. Dark but not too dark accurate detailed enough for me to enjoy. The one detail LCD-3's excel is they don't pick part systems weakness unlike the HD-800. With the HD-800 your chain is only as strong as your weakest link not so with the LCD-3. With the LCD-3 it is more forgiving it is more important to find the right amp but with the HD-800 it's all the above the right amp the right player and it needs to be noise proof from hums and high whining.
I think this is the best cans for dark listening needs. With extra balanced cables and a great pelican style case makes it something special.
I can't seem to part with my LCD-3's just yet. I am very pleased with the build quality and sound quality they are power hungry and clumsy but if you like jazz or blues and classical these are your headphones. I feel these are the polar opposite of the hd800. If you are buying second hand get the serial numbers and contact Audeze not doing so might cost you 400.00 dollars. It also lets you know how old they are and if they have any remaining warranty left.
Please keep in mind this is just my opinion, it is not based on other people's data and graphs. I can't stress this enough so I'm mentioning it more than once know what you are buying if you are not buying directly from Audeze get the serial number and double check. Fazor normally costs more than Non Fazor and non Fazors at this point don't have any sort of warranty remaining. So once more double checking for fazors and warranty remaining is the reason you want the serial numbers Audeze will be more than happy to help you, the Fazor update will end up costing you over 400.00 .
Pros: Two detachable cables comes with a balanced cable and a single ended cable, quality hard case 3 year warranty, excellent resale value darkest signature in this price range, presentation that is second to none. Can be updated and serviced by the factory . I never found them to be too uncomfortable . good bass and very enjoyable midrange .
Cons : not as much detail and high end, expensive and the lack of information and revision markings.
summary if I was going to recommend a single set of headphones I would recommend the HD-800 over the LCD-3 only if you have super quiet super high end equipment . One thing I discovered is in the 2K market most people are not into rock, pop and technical music . The 2 K clients are jazz blues classical smooth genres and that is what LCD-3's are for . Since it is crazy to recommend one set of headphones I always recommend HD800 and the LCD-3 Fazor . This review is not for people that already own the LCD-3 you already know what you have . To get the most out of these headphones you need a good balanced amp (Jotunheim) and the stock balanced cables.
To say one song sounds better with this set of headphones over that set is ridiculous I see it all the time so my review is what I feel based on style of headphones and quality . I feel they have a dark sound signature and good build quality and they come with two cables and have the industries best warranty .
Side note and nothing to do with Audeze LCD-3 but aftermarket expensive cables are the worst investment you can make. If you have to buy expensive cables to make your expensive headphones sound better you are buying the wrong headphones. Another accessory is ear pads again if you are buying expensive ear pads for your expensive headphones you are buying the wrong headphones . I can't stress this enough..... you will never see a dime of that money again unless you run into another ill informed person. The only magic in expensive cables is making your hard earned money disappear .
