4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 98 ratings

Rayna Kirkpatrick has lived her entire life with a secret: she possesses dangerous paranormal abilities. But she’s carefully kept her powers hidden from the world―or so she thinks. When new struggles in her life prompt her to seek information about her abilities, her internet search sends up red flags. Without her knowledge, she is placed under surveillance by a government team who monitors people with unique gifts like hers, individuals known as Trespassers. There are only two options for those manifesting such supernatural abilities: submit to regulation and scientific study or be eliminated.

Damon Hale is an invaluable asset to the government. As a Trespasser himself, he is perfectly positioned to determine how to handle others like him. When a series of unexplained deaths is connected to Rayna, Damon is assigned to go undercover to her California hometown to determine whether she’s the killer they suspect she is. As he gets to know this kind and charming woman, he’s determined to not allow his growing attraction to her to shake his objectivity. But the deaths surrounding her are no coincidence, and as his suspicions about her guilt begin to fade, he realizes he and Rayna must work together to discover the truth or risk becoming the next victims.

I loved every suspenseful minute of it!
The Trespassers by Stephanie Black is one of those books that will keep you up past your bedtime trying to guess who done it!Rayna is the main character of this book. She's got a secret. She can sense other people, but she is afraid she can also kill them. And when people all around her start dying of unknown causes, she's so unsure what to think. I loved the way Rayna wasn't quite sure if she had killed someone or not. It causes some confusion for her, the reader, her sister and so many other characters, including the police.Damon has been sent by the government to study Rayna. His goal is to figure out if she's dangerous. Damon also was unsure if Rayna was dangerous. He pulls her out of the situation. And that creates even more problems for the two of them. Eventually, he determines that he must put some trust in her and in himself so they will figure out what's going on.I didn't see the ending of this one coming. I loved every suspenseful minute of it!I was sent a copy of The Trespassers as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I don’t know about you, but there’s always a little bit of apprehension in picking up a book that you really want to love. There was so much of this book just from the synopsis that I was looking forward to - a supernatural story that leaned heavily into the real world, plus government agents, and a murder mystery? YES PLEASE.

And may I say, I was not disappointed. This book was everything that I’ve learned to love from a Stephanie Black novel, plus the supernatural elements that drove every single page of this book. As a longtime lover of urban fantasy and paranormal suspense, this was absolutely what I came here for, and Ms. Black made good on every single promise that she made throughout the story.

The characters are—as always—well rounded out, and although I’ve never (and hopefully will never) been through what the characters have in these books, their actions seem true to me, and it makes it way more enjoyable to read.

I also loved the supernatural element in this. For those who aren’t big fantasy lovers, fear not. This isn’t overwhelmingly fantastical—in fact, I’d call it soft fantasy. It gives you a little brush of Otherworldliness, but the basic setting of the world is the one that we know and love. The element itself - being able to stop hearts with your thoughts—is also a fascinating one, and one that is very well-developed through the story. This is what happens when an excellent suspense writer dips her hands into fantasy in her own way, and the result is stunning.

This is absolutely one of my top five reads of the year. Thanks, Ms. Black, it was a wonderful ride.

AND NOW I NEED THE SEQUEL. TODAY.

The Trespassers is a great read. This is the first book I’ve read in over a year that I couldn’t put down. I love all things speculative so the premise grabbed me right away. Ms. Black’s engaging characters and the picturesque beach setting are wonderful. I can’t wait for the sequel!

Well, this book was quite the page turner. I really had other things to do, but needed to know how poor Rayna made it through everything. I understood Damon’s distrust, but I was a lot angry with Maggie keeping her drugged and being so lackadaisical about it. A great suspenseful read that has no swearing or even kissing. A lot of psychological things going on, and talk of abuse.

I literally couldn't sleep thinking about this book and the characters.😂

The intrigue is great. I expected a bit more romance, but what happened was true to the characters.

Content: no profanity, no sex

Damon is sent to determine if Rayne has used her paranormal power to murder her father, and gets caught up in a deadly mystery.

This book is well written, with developed characters. I love the relationship between sisters. My only regret is that the romance was so sparse.

There was so much opportunity for the characters to at least notice each other physically, but the only way we even know that they are aware of each other is that friends tell them that they like each other. I’d have rather that they acknowledged their interest in each other, beyond a passing thought.

As far as the mystery, the paranormal element added a lot of intrigue. I enjoyed that aspect, even though it wasn’t too hard to figure out who the guilty party was.
