The Writer Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 186 ratings

It was only meant to be a story. But now someone is dead.

Every Monday, I meet my writing group in a warm, lively bar to drink a glass of wine or two and share our work. It’s the highlight of my week. I don’t go out much, otherwise.

For the last ten years, every time I’ve relaxed, the messages have started again. The black hearts. They’re a warning to remember, as if I could ever forget. Whoever sent them wants to hurt me. They’ve lost me jobs and boyfriends. Is it any wonder I like to hide in fiction?

But now, something even stranger is happening. My tires are slashed. A woman is run over outside my apartment. Both times, I find a black heart.

And both attacks are copied from the stories we shared on Monday night.

My story was about a murdered woman. Terrified, I check the papers every morning. And then it happens. Someone is found dead, and the details are identical to the ones I wrote. Am I going mad, or is someone in my group a killer?

And why are they targeting me? Do they know the truth that lies buried in all my work—the terrible secret I’ve tried so hard to hide?

I have to know…but it could cost me everything.

A psychological thriller! If you like Lisa Jewell, Ruth Ware, and The Wife Between Us, then you’ll love The Writer.

A mystery with a great storyline filled with dark secrets and so many twists and turns that keeps you guessing until the end. The ending was explosive and completely unexpected. A great story that keeps you thinking about it long after you’ve finished it.

Miranda Smith is one of my favorite authors and I just fished her latest book The Writer. The story is about an aspiring author named Becca who has been tormented by an anonymous stalker for the past 10 years. Although Becca has never seen her stalker, someone keeps leaving her an index card with a black heart on it in random places. In the tip jar at work, next to the female lingerie (not hers) in her boyfriend's car, in her mailbox, stapled to the tree in her backyard. Over the years Becca does her best to ignore these subtle threats but once people start dying, she knows she has to take matters into her own hands since the police don't believe in her stalker.

I didn’t care for the book as I didn’t find the characters believable especially the persons committing the crimes. Iiked other book of this author.

Becca Walsh is a struggling writer hoping to be published and having a successful career as an author.
However, so far all she has is her writing group which meets once a week to share each other's stories. What separates Becca from these women though, is her tormenter, someone who knows about Becca's past and refuses to let her forget it. Things then take a drastic turn when someone is murdered in exactly the way Becca's latest story victim is murdered.
Who is responsible? Could it be one of the women in her writing group or someone even closer to her?

This book started really strong; fast paced and straight to the point. In the first 25% we get a good sense of who our MC is and her complex and tormented character. I love when characters have a layer of complexity to them. The suspense begins almost immediately raising many questions with little answers, capturing my attention and keeping me cemented into the pages of this story. There were so many times I thought I had it figured out but I boy was I wrong.
They were many revelations along the way and so many people to suspect as our antagonist, that I found myself even more engrossed and was so pumped for the big reveal at the end.

This is sadly where things fell down for me. The ending felt way too rushed and a little unbelievable. Though, I truly didn't suspect the antagonist's identity, it still didn't blow me away as much as I wanted it to.
After such a suspenseful build-up, I expect the plot twist to be more thrilling and jaw dropping. However, it was very mediocre and unfortunately lackluster. The last little twist felt like an unnecessary almost forgotten detail that the author forgot to include, deciding to just throw it in there at the last minute.
I felt like they were way too many loose ends that needed to be tied up at the end, resulting in my rating of 3.75 stars. Had the ending been better crafted, this would've easily been a 5-star read, easily!
Having said all that, it was still a very enjoyable, bingeable and unputdownable read with a solid plot, if not mediocre ending. I will definitely be exploring more of this author's work.

I loved this book about an aspiring writer, I read it one day! This not too common trope among psychologicial thrillers is one I'd like to see more of--Authors writing about authors. Becca was a wonderful and inspirational character, and I loved all the twists and turns. The author's breezy writing style made it a fast and easy read, and I enjoyed the humor that was sprinkled through out the book. I look forward to reading more books from this talented writer!

I was really Intrigued by the premise of this book but actually reading it was a different story. I had to keep reading the blurb to make sure I was reading the right story. The pace of this book was really slow, and the main character was hard to relate with. She was incredibly juvenile at times and I had to keep taking breaks throughout reading.
Without giving spoilers, the “bad guy” came so far out of left field, there was no way to even guess that. That person wasn’t talked about, or brought up, they just appeared at the end. It’s almost like I didn’t have enough information to even play along while reading….

The Writer is a fun, sharp read with a good premise and an unexpected ending.
Becca is a writer and is struggling to make ends meet.
She attends a writing group with four other thriller writers.
The Mystery Maidens met once a week to discuss their current works in progress.
Becca also has a secret and she believes one of them is stalking her.
When her newest story plays out in real life, Becca thinks she could be in danger if she doesn’t uncover the truth…..
A hooking read and definitely one to check out.
It caught my attention pretty much straight away and I was invested in the plot, characters and setting.
Fast paced, short chapters, inviting writing and I’m pleased to say I’m keen to read more by this author.
I thought one thing but it went completely the other way.
Full of suspense, lots of suspects and a twist here and there.
With a clever mystery to stimulate the mind, The Writer is a great satisfying book.
