TERRIFIC, except for one minor issue ....

When my internal sound card went bad, being a novice I wanted something I could just plug in to a USB port without having to open up my PC case and replace things. What sold me on this over all the other external sound cards was the USER CONFIGURABLE ten band equalizer (not just presets), it makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE! I wouldn't ever buy anything else. Since it's USB, there's no hum or interference like you hear on a built-in sound card. And even aside from that, the sound quality improvement is like night and day.

The only Reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has a peculiarity. Whatever USB port you insert it into when installing the software becomes the permanent, dedicated port for the unit. If you move it to a different port it won't work. A dialog box pops up asking you if you want to uninstall and re-install the software for the different port. I don't know why this is, seems like a major oversight on the part of the software developer, USB is supposed to be hot swappable. Anyway, keep that in mind before you install it, better put it in your least-used USB port and label the port in case you have to disconnect all cables.

Excellent sound

I really like the sound of this gadget. After installing the software (the included CD wouldn't load, but the drivers were on the support section of their site) I ran the output first into a set of Sony headphones and then tried it with my old Labtec powered speakers with sub.. Might not be to everyone's taste, but I liked it. Plenty of volume, customizable EQ, etc.

I would not agree with it having "soundcard" as a keyword, since it is strictly an output device. I had been looking for a USB soundcard as a second soundcard for my computer, and Amazon recommended this device. But since the company has a pdf of the manual on the page, I would have known that if I'd been sensible and downloaded the manual first. Still, I like the sound and with a bit of rethinking as to which soundcard will do what, I find it more than useful enough.

They would have had 5 stars on this unit if it weren't for the installation CD. Or more properly, if it weren't for the item in their support pages' FAQ about how if the installation CD won't work, then it's something wrong with your machine because CD discs almost never fail. If it had been my machine, then why does the machine have no problem with other discs and why were all three machines in my household unable to load it? Bad bulk burns *do* happen, and there aren't many companies that do a lot of quality control checks on their installation CDs. If it was a relatively rare problem, then it logically wouldn't be a "frequently asked question", now would it?

Suggestion to Turtle Beach, a better answer might have been "That happens with every company's install disks at least once in a while, but click here to download the very same drivers and software. And thank you for buying Turtle Beach."

But once I had the installation software, everything went without a hitch. The device sounds really good, and it wasn't hard at all on an XP machine to get it to "play nice" with the sound hardware already installed. Overall, for someone looking for a nice sounding audio output device that fits a USB port, I'd definitely give it two thumbs up.

I am using a Denon AVR-4600 with Paradigm Millenia 20 speakers. I have been running analog audio from my Vaio laptop (Vista 32-bit) via the headphone jack with a splitter - obviously not a very good arrangement. It took me about 15 minutes to get the Audio Advantage Micro up and running with an optical connection. The sound is noticeably improved - cleaner and with no hiss or other artifacts. My comparisons are with what I hear from my CD player. I listen mainly to jazz and classical. Could I tell the difference between a CD and lossless WAV from my laptop via the Micro and an optical cable? Maybe so, but what I'm hearing is very good. I'm not likely to do much with the Micro's menu, but it's a good idea to check it out to be sure you have neutral settings, and it does give you some flexibility. If anything happens to dampen my enthusiasm, I'll come back and edit this. In any case, if your laptop or PC doesn't have a digital audio output, the Micro is an inexpensive way to get one.

The integrated sound device was terrible- lots cutting out and/or static during heavy I/O and an uncorrectable hiss during silence. This sound device solved all of these problems and delivered perfect sound. Superb clarity and pure silence. It worked immediately out of the box--just plug it in and it works. I'm running Windows XP with SP2 on a Dell GX620 low-end system. The driver disc wasn't required, it just enabled itself and worked. The internal sound output stopped when it started working. It automatically made itself the default sound output device.

Haven't tried the optical output yet, but as far as using it with headphones, it is works as promise.

WARNING: The output was very strong and loud, so make sure to lower your volume before donning your headphones. Not a fun experience getting an unexpected blast of sound, when I pulled out my headphones from the internal port and plugged it into the USB device. It was three times louder than the on-board sound output.

The background hiss from the crummy sound card in my laptop finally became unbearable after I bought a decent pair of earbuds that picked it up loud and clear. After spending a couple of weeks looking at the various options for eliminating laptop sound card background noise, I bought a Turtle Beach USB micro sound card.
After plugging the included two foot USB cable extension into the USB port in the back of the laptop, and then plugging the TB Micro sound card into the cable and the earbuds into the Micro sound card, I was greeted with....silence. The background noise was completely gone. Actually, that's all I bought it for so I haven't loaded the included CD with Turtle Beach's drivers, 10 band equalizer, surround sound and sound effects. The default XP drivers work just fine.
Also, I haven't noticed any increase in CPU useage or memory requirements. It just works.
