Rotary volume control, in my opinion much easier to use over push buttons (either hardware or on screen software buttons)
The GPS button will toggle between the active audio source and the GPS software--Nice
Radio function and graphic excellent
Sound equalization and tone controls excellent
iPod function and graphic very good
CD function-nothing special, it just works
DVD function-again nothing special, it just works--excellent picture
AUX-IN--I use the rear audio AUX-IN to listen to an external satellite radio receiver. This function works well
Bluetooth function-phone book transfers to unit, accepts calls from any audio/navigation mode, switches to Bluetooth function for call then returns to previous mode. Bluetooth music function works well, with play, next, previous and pause supported. No display of file/song name. Overall rating very good
Rear Camera-I added a license plate mounted rear view camera which functions very well with this unit--excellent
GPS Navigation--Over all I give this function a very good to excellent. I have the external GPS antenna mounted on top of the dash (antenna cable not long enough to route to the outside the truck). USA maps appear to reasonably up to date. Navigation routing--average. I have seen better routes and most certainly have seen worse. Over all pleased with the GPS function.
USB/SD MP3 audio function-this is a letdown. Sound is good, but graphic and file navigation leave a lot to be desired. Unit does not properly display long file names which makes navigation difficult. I give this function a mediocre rating
USB/SD Video function. Very poor. I have yet to find a file format that the unit can read.
Front AUX-IN too close to the volume control as is the front USB input
Boot time. From the time power is applied, it takes about 6 seconds for this unit to boot to the last audio input (radio, AUX-IN, etc.) active before previous power-off. Then it takes another 10 seconds for the GPS software to boot.
Considering price/performance of this unit, I would purchase again for second vehicle and would recommend it to a friend.
Amazon as always quickly shipped it out and it arrived within a very reasonable amount of time (Thanks Amazon!)
Wiring is pretty easy. I had to purchase an additional module to use the steering wheel controls. The module required some splicing into factory steering wheel control wires. I recommend not cutting the wires but rather strip back some insulation and solder to it in case you put your factory radio back in. The main wiring harness should be bench wired up to a Metra or other brand vehicle radio wiring harness adapter.
Overall the radio works ok EXCEPT If I have the volume turned down to ZERO when I shutoff the car the radio volume does not work when you power on the car again. The on screen indicator indicates that the volume is going up and down however I can not hear anything. The fix is to press the MUTE button 2 times to get your sound back. The first time you press MUTE it indicates that the sound is muted. When you press it a second time the audio comes back.
I contacted tech support (HOPE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS!). Tech support was slow to respond to my support request. I received an email from Boss Audio Tech Support With This Response:
*** I believe that the volume knob on your unit is defective. You should be
*** able to adjust that at any time will the unti is powered on. How long
*** ago did you purchase this unit?
I responded right away with the requested info. They never got back to me with return authorization or anything for that matter.
As of 10/7/2013 I have had no luck getting it taken care of.
The nav is decent, better than my stock Toyota nav system but not as good as my Magellan external suction cupped to the windshield nav system. When keying in characters it is has some lag, like it needs some more ram or something. I will point out that the NAV does have a nice collection of POI's, Gas Stations, Restaurants ect..
I added a backup camera and that works well, had to find the reverse light output to trigger the cam to come on when I back up. Luckily after some Google searching I found the complete wiring diagram for my rav4 which made locating the correct wires very easy.
The internal amp seems as good as my factory unit, maybe even a little better. The DVD player is good, the picture on the screen very nice. I tried out a dvd and was impressed.
The unit is slow to read usb drives. The more data, the longer it takes to load. I have to keep no more than 500 MB of mp3's on my usb drives to allow the unit to read my usb drive in a reasonable amount of time.
When connected to an iPhone or iPod the display is nice and allows operation of the device from steering wheel or touchscreen.
The Bluetooth phone interface works ok. Some people say I sound distant but its not unusable. My Bluetooth sound problems could be where I located the external mic. The internal mic did not work very good for me, no one could understand me when using the internal mic. The unit will download your contacts from your phone and display on the screen as well as the standard number pad. When you get an incoming call the music is interrupted with a ring sound. This is a great thing for me, I like my music a little on the loud side and in the past missed a lot of phone calls because of that. Now I get every call.
Also, When in reverse the unit decreases the volume automatically. This is a good safety feature however once in reverse you can not adjust the volume up or down until the car is out of reverse.
In the end if my volume worked correctly and tech support was more customer service oriented it would be a 5 star review.
Ok it's been a year or so now using this and it still working great. And I nearly caught my vehicle on fire due to bad wiring job I did for my fog lights. Fuses are important. I melted some of the wires on the radio and it'd still running. Now on really cold days the radio does need some time to worm up. But over all still a great radio.
We also found out the Nav system would not work and submitted on that as well with the same... NOTHING. We ended up returning the item and going with a different radio.
I am sure if BOSS would have made a simple phone call or even replied to my help request all would have come out differently.
