Product Description

Would you like to add audio/sound effects to your next project, without an Arduino+Shield? Or maybe you don't even know how to use microcontrollers, you just want to make a sound play whenever you press a button. What about something that has to be small and portable? You are probably feeling a little frustrated: it's been very hard to find a simple, low cost audio effects trigger that is easy to use and does not require any programming. This board has 11 Triggers! Connect up to 11 buttons or switches, each one can trigger audio files to play. Headphones, powered speakers or even wire up an amplifiers to make loud sounds when plugged into the stereo line out. You can create five different types of triggers which will cover a large range of projects without any programming. What do we mean by trigger effects? Depending on your project you may need to have audio play in different ways. Triggers include Basic, Hold Looping, Latch loop, Play Next, and Play Random.

The sound board is designed to be simple: it does not have polyphonic ability, can't play MP3's (MP3 is patented and costs $ to license, so this board uses the similar but not-patented OGG format, there's tons of free converters that will turn an MP3 into OGG), isn't reprogrammable or scriptable, and you can't have any other kind of trigger type. However, there's a good chance the project you want to make will work great.

I saw some confused and unhappy customers on another page, so I wanted to point out that there are 6 versions of the Adafruit FX Sound Board board, so just make sure to order the one you want! I've listed them and their main differences at the end.

I chose this version because I am using UART to trigger the audio from another microcontroller, so I don't need the extra trigger pins. I am mounting the board inside of a larger enclosure with other components, so I am running my own headphone jack back to the same side of the board as the USB connector.

I also have the FeatherWing Music maker, but that uses the VS1053B chip, and I found that the additional strain on my nrf52 was causing problems with bluetooth running. This board uses the vs1000 chip, which is a full "system on a chip," and it happily runs on its own without conflicting with any of the bluetooth timing. Another advantage is that I had to lower the audio quality on the FeatherWing's files to get them to play correctly. But this board, again, happily blows thorough high frequency, high quality files without issue, and it sounds great!

I'm in love with this dev board - we have 2 now! The first one I used to add a sound inside a stuffed animal when you squeeze it and my son love that so much but wanted it to play songs so I got another and 3D printed and enclosure with 6 buttons to be a "my first MP3 (ogg) player" and he loves it! Great board, great functionality and easy on the battery draw when not playing a sound, and much smaller than an arduino + sound shield.

This is a fun little toy to play with. I had to purchase a couple more after playing a bit with one. I am thinking I am going to make a annoying cricket on steroids with this. ( •̀ᴗ•́ )و ̑̑

Works great. Not every USB cable will work to load the files. I tried 5 different ones before I found one that was meant for 'Transferring' and not just 'Charging'. I'm assuming the wiring in each cable is a little different. Wish they would just send one with the board

adafruit is a great company and this mini sound board is no exception. you might want to get the "Audio IC Development Tools Adafruit Mono 2.5W Class D Audio Amplifier - PAM8302 (1 piece)" with this. "Programming" it was super easy, as was set up. you just drag and drop files and name them in a certain way. soldering the board was also very easy. can easily do a project involving this in an afternoon.

No instruction came with the boards. I went on line and found some drawings and limited instructions but I have not got it to work. It may or may not of any value. I just can't get it to work. I have not found any place to contact to help me out.

I am using it in conjunction with a microcontroller (Arduino WiFi MKR 1010) with serial communication between boards. No issues; followed example and used recommended libraries. I also used this board with digital input. Either ways, it does what the specifications claim. Note that you need an amp to amplify the line level audio output.

Tried several different cables before it showed up as a device on my computer. Strange, because the other cables are fine. Not sure why this board is picky.

Otherwise, sound triggers are neat, up to 80 sounds can be played if set up that way.

16MB available storage. Plenty fory use as a car horn
