From his silly, but infectious hit making baptism as a Royal Teen through his hand in creating his own first rate de facto "tribute" band (the Jersey Boys) this artist never stopped moving foward. He guided the unique Four Seasons sound from a novel steamroller of Italian-American soul to a fleshed out legacy chock full of emotional impact and lasting hooks and choruses. He also worked and created for great artists from across the musical aisles, and even composed and produced what many consider one of Frank Sinatra's greatest artistic triumphs! When your music is covered by acts as diverse as the Bay City Rollers, the Walker Brothers and Nina Simone, you're doing something brilliant!
You'll hear hits and covers of hits here, and witness the development of a major talent even you might have underestimated. You'll sing along, you'll listen intensely, and you'll discover (few have heard the tracks from his West End theatrical production). You'll wonder why it took so long for someone to finally even try to put together such a compilation. You'll join the quiet cult of music lovers who always considered the man a Genius, as certainly that's the other "G" that goes along with his audio!!
Of the three reissue projects (a “Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons” box, a “Frankie Valli – Selected Solo Works” box and this 2-disc CD (whose title I find quite clever), I think this was the most interesting. I’m still working my way through the other “boxes” but there is material here that, honestly, I don’t ever remember hearing (and, in the case of the previously unissued recording from the London cast of “Peggy Sue Got Married”, most folks haven’t heard either.).
If the 36 tracks on this album were a Pandora station or a Spotify Playlist they would be called “The Bob Gaudio Station”. It’s amazing the talent this guy had from writing “Short Shorts” for the Royal Teens in 1958 (this could be one of the first rock and roll 45s I acquired as a teenager) to writing songs for Sinatra’s “Watertown” album – a Sinatra release I probably haven’t heard in more than 40 years! The variety of music styles here is its strength – but can also be a weakness. There are some Frankie Valli songs that didn’t make it, and yes Gaudio wrote during the disco period. I like the fact that two different recordings of a Gaudio song are presented – often back-to-back (Walker Brothers’ and Cher’s version of “ The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine (Anymore)” for example) or when Lene Lovich sings “The Night” a few tracks after Valli’s solo version.Read more ›
Rhino's two-disc set collects thirty-six tracks that sample Gaudio's songwriting, including material from the Four Seasons, Jerry Butler, Chuck Jackson, Cher, Nancy Wilson, Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Lene Lovich, Ruthie Henshall, the Royal Teens, Bay City Rollers, Tremeloes, Walker Brothers and Temptations. The Four Seasons material features hits and album tracks, including a pair from the group's Gaudio-Jake Holmes penned 1969 concept album, The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette. Perhaps more interesting to Four Seasons fans will be songs Gaudio wrote for or turned into hits for other acts.
The Royal Teens' "Short Shorts" opens the set, as it did Gaudio's hit-making career. The single rose to #3 in 1958 and Gaudio dropped out of high school to tour, meeting Frankie Valli along the way.Read more ›
