Enjoy your music in peace with
active noise-cancelling technology
These headphones detect environmental noise using miniature built-in microphones, and apply a corresponding sound-cancelling signal. The active noise-cancelling circuitry is located in an external module attached to the headphone cable. This greatly reduces on-ear weight for long-wearing comfort. Although compact, the headphones deliver powerful, immersive sound, thanks to their precision high-efficiency full-range drivers and premium internal components. They’re ideal for use with the Apple iPod, iPhone and iPod touch, as well as other portable music players, computers, in-flight entertainment systems and many other devices. The ATH-ANC1 features super-soft ear pads for complete comfort, even on long trips or extended listening sessions.
Unlike some other noise-cancelling headphones, the ATH-ANC1 headphones work even without batteries or when the noise-cancelling feature is turned off. In addition to its handy travel pouch, it comes with a 1.6-foot extension cord, an airline adapter and a AAA-size battery.

So these Audio Technica Quiet Point headphones, newly released this January, have been an extremely pleasant surprise. The sound reproduction is the best I have come across for portable music players. The overall sound is natural and full, without the juiced-up quality that some headphones substitute for real fidelity and which can quickly produce "ear-fatigue." Sound separation is excellent; bottom end sound is full and remarkably clean and sharp. The phones fit comfortably and securely, and can be worn for hours without ear-fatigue. They also reduce outside noise, whether from an airliner or a crowded coffee-shop, as well as any of the other players I've listened to.
These headphones are also well-designed. Whether you are a frequent air traveler or simply like to have your music player in your day pack for listening in a cafe or while shopping, the lightweight (1 pound) but sturdy construction, and a fold-up feature that makes the 'phones easy to store and also protects them from damage, are big plusses.
These headphones can't substitute for the fidelity of good full-size audiophile headphones for the home, but in my experience that is true with all headphones and earbuds designed for portable music players. Overall, they do a better job than any other product in this category that I have heard, and at about $100 the price can't be beat.
I got them a couple of weeks ago and I've also used them at the gym on the treadmill and eliptical machine. They worked great there too.
They come with a little pouch that they fit into when you fold the headphones. Since they are light and foldable, I don't think they are super tough but they don't feel flimsy. I like how they are designed.
Overall I am very pleased and would recommend them highly. If $100 is not too much for you, buy them if you want something functional, lightweight, works great with iphone 3GS, noise cancelling and sounds awesome.
The noise cancelling is, I think, a little more effective than the Sennheisers, though both have somewhat muffled sound as a result of the noice cancellation process, a small price to pay when trying to drown out the noisy people (especially overly loud headphones) and the rumble from NYC's dilapidated subway tunnels. The location of the battery pack is really annoying. The wire between the battery pack and the headphone jack should be longer, for example, to allow you to life the device to use it while the pack is clipped to something more than a few inches from your face; but it's too short for this (in this respect, the Sennheiser design is better by a little, even though the battery pack is larger); AT tried to solve this by also providing an extension cord, but using it just makes the device more awkward in shape and more likely to get caught on something, especially since the cable is not glossy/smooth enough to ride of clothing, bag straps, etc.
The battery pack is disappointing in that the noise cancelling on-off switch does not move smoothly, and the ON and OFF lettering is so small that it's not helpful; AT should consider making this switch more intuitive to switch (if you are not looking at it) and should also enlarge the lettering.
I think it's not clear from the photos, but these headphones are pretty lightweight and can be easily stowed in your shoulder bag or backpack.
Final note: if your body is shaking a lot (e.g., on a really bumpy NYC subway?) you might experience a rumbling sound in the headphones as the motion overwhelms the headphones' ability to cancel out noise. However, this does not happen often enough to affect my overall opinion.
UPDATE: The headphones' right channel DIED after 8 months of ordinary use. NOT GOOD. I guess folding the wires and putting them carefully into the case is a destructive act.
