I am not an audiophile but I know and enjoy good sound when I hear it. I have been using Shure earbuds for several years and I really like them. However, I found that my ears would not adjust to pressure while flying because the buds blocked the canal completely. This caused great discomfort for several hours after landing. I will continue to use my earbuds but wanted a decent set of on or around-the-hear headphones for flying.

Important features I was looking for: Great sound, portability, price <$150. Listening habits: iPhone/iPad - podcasts, rock, classic rock, occasional classical and jazz, movies.

First tried Bose OE headphones from Costco. At $109 I was willing to give them a shot. Audio snobs do not seem to like Bose products but I am generally satisfied. The compact size and portability of this set drew me in. I took them on a cross-country flight and knew just an hour in that I was going to return them when I got home. They sound just fine but they were quite uncomfortable. The on-ear design made my ears hurt after 30min or so. The cartilage was very sore from being bent back against my head. I really liked the breakaway style cord, the folded size of the headphones, and the storage case but none of these things justified the discomfort. It's probably just as well, but listening through iPhone I could not crank the volume to 11.

After extensive store visits and online research, I almost purchased Sony's highly-acclaimed MDR-7506. However, I did not want to deal with a bulky coiled cord. A decent replacement cord would have been $30, putting total purchase at $129.

Further research brought me to the Audio Technica ATH-M35. Great reviews and met my requirements. Appeared to fold nicely for travel and although the stock cord is far too long for my application, it is straight and could be shortened fairly easily. (I plan on shortening to about 48in) Took me a day or two to pull the trigger but if they had integrated track/volume control and a microphone I would have paid more and ordered even faster.

They sound GREAT. Fold up small enough to shove in carry on bag. Decent ambient noise dampening. Ear cups are comfortable though a little warm but that is expected. Haven't traveled with them yet but I anticipate good performance even with airplane engine drone. Fairly low profile and construction seems much better than other more expensive models I considered.

For 1/3 price of even the cheapest Beats model, I will gladly use and abuse these for a few years and replace them if necessary. (I tried Beats in store but never considered for purchase - simply comparing from a cost/value standpoint.)

I've had these for a month now.

Pros:
- Very Comfortable
- Looks well built and sturdy
- Sound is decent

Cons:
- Sound is decent but a little on the "bassy" side
- The cable is a little longer than it needs to be

Note that sound is somewhat subjective and that you will never have 100% agreement on headphones since people's hearing and expectations differ widely. I had a hearing test recently and the ear doctor said that for my age (50+) my hearing is excellent. This is probably because I have been a part time musician since I was ten, and a recent study indicates that people that play musical instruments do have better hearing and maintain hearing as they age compared to the non-musician population (so, there is my disclaimer :-)

I compared these with the Bose AE2's which sound better though not perfect (and are much more expensive), Sony MDR 7506 Studio Monitor which are one of the standards used in recording studios, and AKG K240 high impedance studio monitors. Compared to these the ATs sounded pretty good, though not as good in the mids and overall definition. Nevertheless, they are a good all around headphone for casual listening, with pleasant sound that does not tire your ears. They are a good value at the Amazon price and probably the best set of headphones you can get in this price range.

my headphone experience is most using around 25 to 75 dollar bluetooth headphones such as lg, koss, sony in the past to go with my iphone or android phone. but lately ive become interested in better sound. so after doing a lot of research senheisser seemed like the best brand so i bought a pair at best buy for like $100. they were not bad but just didnt live up to what i thought it should sound like. so i was pretty close to getting the audio technica ath-m50 but decided to try the 35 instead. and i gotta say they blow the sennheisers that i got at best buy out the water. these are really good headphones. they are balanced in that the bass does not drown out the mid and high range sounds. there is definitely enough bass but doesn't over power the natural sounds of the music i listen to. i would recommend these to anyone that is venturing into good headphones. my next purchase will be the 50s as they have excellent reviews and are suppossed to be that much better then the 35s. i figured i'd let my unsophisticated ear get snobby first before investing in the 50s. otherwise i wear these at home and on the train commuting to work. they are a bit unruly in that they are big and have a ridiculously long cord. but they are very comfortable and block out a lot of noise with nothing playing. i thought they would ruin my lovely combed locks but they remained undisturbed even after 3-4 times of putting them on and taking them off and wearing for 30-60 mins at a time (hair gel not withstanding). i'd suggest these for anyone looking to venture into good headphones. i have so far listened to downtempo, trance, alternative, 70s rock, and jazz and this music sounds excellent on these cans.

Oh yes. I like these a great deal. Another great example of listening to the Amazon community for great products at a great price. These are excellent sound quality, particularly for the price. They're not active noise reduction, because i intentionally chose not to go down that road after quite a bit of research. But these do fit over your ears nicely and comfortably, and block out a lot of ambient noise. And there are no batteries to run down, and these are nice and light for travel. i got them for listening to music on flights. Know that the length of the cable on these is, well, long... But I left the tie wrap on the part i don't need and have had no problems at all. And if you have a need to use these in the studio, you're all set, too. After a little burn-in especially, these are just great headphones. Would definitely recommend over some others I've tried -- and that cost a lot more. Very nice find, and i am very very pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Molto buone
Reviewed in Italy on January 27, 2015

4.0 out of 5 stars Good pair of headphones!

Good pair of headphones with high quality sound. The lead wire is a little too long (refer the specs.), but no issues as I already knew that before buying.

The Audio Quality is very good. I use it with FiiO E6 Fujiyama Portable Headphone Amplifier. Without it, the audio level was just OK with my iPhone 5C or Mac Mini. With the amplifier, the sound is awesome (read works for me)

5.0 out of 5 stars Audio-Technica ATH M 35 Headphone
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 1, 2013
My daughter wanted a pair of decent 'over ear' headphones but I was reluctant to spend over £100 as I didn't think that she would look after them. I did some research on the ATH M35 headphones which received good reviews as did almost every other pair of headphones that Audio-Technica make. When they arrived I decided to do a comparison with my Bose QC15 over ear noise cancelling headphones that cost £270. To my surprise, these £59 headphones sounded better than the Bose with lots of detail and a really nice bass sound (and they were comfortable as well). I like listening to good quality music and have recently spent over £1500 on some decent hi-fi separates (Monitor-Audio, Cambridge Audio etc). Suffice to say, these headphones sound fantastic and are more than worth the price tag. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Geniales

I would like to rate it 1/5 beacause this gives no value for money. The cord is inpractally thick , lenthy and bulky. I should have bought 5 sony headphones for the price of this that provice the same sound quality.
