Audio-Technica ATR6550
Condenser Shotgun Microphone
Crisp & intelligible pickup—far away or up close. In its “Tele” range setting, this cardioid condenser is engineered to pick up dialogue and sound effects at a distance, while bypassing ambient noise such as traffic, air-handling systems, room reverberation and mechanically coupled vibrations. Designed especially for use with video cameras. For best results, position mic as close to sound source as possible. Beyond three or four feet, the audio may start to sound distant. Also, try to aim the mic at the sound source, as sound from the side or rear will not be picked up well. Still, some side or rear sound may be recorded—keep this in mind, especially if mounting mic to a camera, since some camera operation noise may be captured.
Winner of numerous industry awards, Audio-Technica manufactures products that set quality, durability and price/performance standards for live sound tours, broadcast and recording studios, corporate and government facilities, house-of-worship venues, and more. A-T microphones are chosen for critical government installations and are also selected for major broadcast music events, including the Grammy Awards and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

Then one time in the middle of shooting an event, it just stopped working. When I got home, it worked perfectly. Strange. Then I jiggled the cable at the strain relief, where it enters the mic. Bingo -- the audio cut in and out as I moved the cable. Being somewhat handy with a soldering iron, I opened up the mic to see if I could just rewire the cable, but no -- everything is potted thoroughly in glue (which is probably what led to the failure in the first place), so repairing this thing would take more time than it's worth.
And there in lies the fatal flaw. With a microphone equipped with an XLR output jack instead of a permanently attached cable, you could just replace the cable and carry on. But this mic sooner or later is going to let you down, and you better hope you have a spare mic handy when it does.
The not so good part = The wind filter doesn't work. We had a very slight breeze and the mic would pick up the rumble of the breeze. Maybe it works well as a "pop" filter. If you mount the mic to a video camera and use the zoom you will hear "VRRRRRRR" because the mic is super sensitive. This mic needs to be isolated from the camera with "O" rings or used on a stand. Or edit out the noise. No "ON" led. This microphone is made in CHINA. $64?? What did I expect..Taiwan would have been better. I'm saying buy this microphone. It sounds good ( I'm almost deaf folks ) and it was $64..try a dead rat for the wind filter. see what I've done on youtube. David A Loving

Great, same here. This is for you.
For reference, I'm pairing this with a Tascam DR-05 digital audio recorder--another entry-level piece of equipment that seems to be pretty good for beginners like me.
So, the microphone. Things I've noticed:
It records at a very low volume. I have to up the gain on my recorder to what seems like an absurd level during recording, and even then, the wave forms I'm looking at in Audacity afterward are really tiny. Nice-sounding, but tiny. I have to do a lot of amplification after the fact, which tends to diminish the sound quality a bit.
As with any recording device, it pays to record in a good location. I don't have a sound booth or anything in my house, but there is a noticeable difference between recording in the voluminous hardwood expanse of my living room versus the little nook in my office where there's carpet and curtains and all kinds of sound-dampening.
No matter what you do, either during recording or in post, with this mic it's very difficult to get audio that is both 1) loud enough to be heard without turning your volume up crazy high, and 2) completely noise-free. The best I've gotten is somewhere in the middle--audio that sounds reasonably good if you turn the volume up a little higher than you normally would, but if you turn it up too high, all that noise you thought you filtered out in post creeps back in.
I have not tried any recording on the "tele" setting, although I have waved it around with the headphones plugged in, and yes, you can hear stuff from pretty far away. Could you actually record clean sound from a distance of more than a couple of feet? I'm guessing no.
Bottom line:
Are you going to sound pro with this mic? Probably not, unless you're an expert sound engineer who can work magic in post--in which case you won't be using a bargain-basement mic to begin with. Are your videos or podcasts going to have noticeably better audio quality than those of the person recording everything on their phone? Absolutely yes.
For the price, this is probably worth buying if you're a dabbler like me and clumsily trying to figure out how tools work, sort of like the apes at the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey. If you're like me, you'll probably spend some time experimenting with it and then set your sights on a better piece of equipment when you feel ready.

Unfortunately, the mic produces far too high a level of white noise (hiss)- which is worse on the 'tele' setting - to be usable for this purpose.
(Comparative tests with semi-pro sE4400a proved that it isn't the mixer which is the problem)
For now, I can possibly get round it with noise gating but I will be looking for a better mic.
It would be great for an application where somebody is bawling uut rock music close-mic'ed, but that's not what its advertised as!
Pros:
Very cheap
decent quality sound
Cons:
no battery indicator
slightly too long so you cant look through the viewfinder
Only problem is it must be really badly shielded - if you go anywhere near a light or power source it buzzes horribly and makes the sound unusable! Maybe that's just a problem with 3.5mm microphones in general. We've fixed it by buying an XLR adapter and cable, and making sure we cover the plug with our hands when near lights!
However just to let you know the image seems to be outdated as large audio jack adapter shown in it isn't specified in the 'what's in the box' list and isn't included with the other items in the packaging.
Overall I am very happy with this microphone and it is a good investment.
