I got this as a replacement for my old JVC table (from the 80s).
I wouldn't say set-up was "dead simple", as this was the first time I'd ever replaced a cartridge. I had been expecting it to be a 10-minute operation, and then I would be kicking back with a beer and a Clash record. I was wrong! Doing this, and most things, with a turntable is a very delicate procedure, and takes time and patience and a very small screwdriver.
Alignment is something you have to be familiar with. I wasn't. I had no idea I would have to align the cartridge, I'm embarrassed to say. I installed it, put on a record and was appalled at how awful it sounded... the audio from the left channel sounded like it was going through a distortion pedal.
Luckily, there are some simple protractors online to get the cartridge aligned. While doing this, I discovered that my tonearm's counterweight was installed backwards (can't believe I had never noticed that before). It's a miracle I had been enjoying the table for nearly three years. Once I got that fixed, balanced the arm and aligned the cartridge, I was completely satisfied with how it sounded. The price is right on this one, and it sounds awesome.

Received cartridge one day early and was well packaged with no damage. It performs beautifully and tracks at 2 grams which prolong record and stylus premature wear. I ordered it with the Audio Technica AT HS1 universal headshell. I replaced the stylus with a 78 rpm stylus for my 78 record collection. Now I have a complete unit for 33/45 and one for 78's. Only takes a few seconds to change over. Now I have a spare stylus for 33/45 use if needed. It tracks at 2 grams also and really makes my old 78's come alive. The AT95E is a very popular cartridge and has proven to be very reliable. For the money and quality you can't go wrong. 5 STARS.........

A Cartridge That Outperforms Its Predecessor

Apparently, this is an updated version of Audio Technica's consumer workhorse cartridge. The updated version of the AT-95 now requires slightly greater tracking force (2 grams of nominal tracking force as opposed to 1.75 grams).

Compared to the older version that came with a Thorens TD-235 that I purchased 4 years ago, the current version sounds more dynamic. Percussive sounds like drum kits sound more aggressive and abrupt in their transient attack. To me this sounds more natural. In fact, the current AT-95 sounds great; nothing seems to be added nor taken away. The earlier AT-95 sounds somewhat laid back and slightly muffled in comparison. The price is also slightly lower than the original $50 so this is really good news. Its tracking of inner grooves is also good.

In case you're wondering how the AT-95 compares to a premium moving magnet (such as the AT-440ML series) from Audio Technica, the current version sounds most similar to the AT-440MLa. The AT-440ML and AT-440MLb have an advantage in tracking extended highs. Many listeners may mistake this for brightness unless they listen to the duration of the attack and decay of percussive sounds. The much smaller MicroLine stylus of the AT-440ML cartridges simply follow the contours of the grooves more accurately. In fact, it does an even better job at playing inner grooves. You do get what you pay for, you know.

If you don't like those and actually prefer the AT-95's sound, you're actually enjoying sound at a much lower price! So you can be a winner either way!

Easily the best cartridge in its price range and then some

Outstanding for the price! If you only have $40 to spend on cartrudge, this is the one to buy.
I've owned a vast rage of cartridges, including: Ortofon OM5, OM10, OM20, VMS30 MKII, X5-MC, various Shures including the V15VMR, Grado black, green, silver, gold, reference Platinum, several Audio Technicas, Stantons, and a Clearaudio Virtuoso.
I could point out a few flaws with the little AT95e, but for $40, it's pointless to pick it apart. I'll just say that it is very musically satisfying to listen with. The Shure V15VMR (no longer made and hard to find), Grado Reference Platinum ($300) and Clearaudio Virtuoso ($700) are the only cartridges I've used that are clearly more worthy than this cartridge.
If I didn't have the audiophile bug, I'd be perfectly happy with the AT95e. It's very good. If you're on a budget, look no further. Buy it and save your cash for a much more expensive cartridge, because between this and cartridges that cost hundreds of dollars, there isn't much deviation in quality...though the Nagaoka MP-110 may be an interesting contender, but costs $120 or more.

One of the greatest budget cartridges ever made.

Really don't have to say much as anybody "in the know" has already heard it all. The AT95E is an excellent choice for it's price range with great frequency response and excellent tracking. It gives a wide, warm sound with good bass response just enough brightness to please most listeners. Absolutely a top 5 entry level audiophile cartridge. Just be sure to set up your tonearm fully and correctly when you install, as you should with any new cartridge. Taking the time to properly setup your turntable will make all the difference in performance and sound, and it's something you will notice if you're upgrading from a cheap cartridge. Most of my album collection is old school 70s & 80s R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, and Jazz. The AT95E covers all of them well and I'm quite happy with the sound. It may not capture the deep bass of my Hip Hop LPs like maybe a Grado Black or Shure M44-7, but it does well enough for me. There are a lot of excellent cartridges in every price range and it can be hard to determine what's right for you, but the AT95E is easily a knockout if you're on a budget but looking for great sound.
