I have and use headphones for 2 distinct purposes. The first is to listen to mainly lossless music via portable rigs (Chord Hugo/Fiio X5ii, Chord Mojo/AK100 mk2, etc.) The second is for late-night viewing of DVDs & blu-rays via the headphone out jack on my Sony STR-DN1040 AV receiver. I've found that high impedance headphones work best with AV receivers, and the ATH-R70x prove the point -- they're a great match for movies.
As to their sound, don't think that because they're considered neutral in sound that they're bass shy; in fact, they pack quite a punch in the lower ends.
Bottom line: Great sounding, audiophile-quality headphones, providing you replace the uncomfortable, not-for-big-ears earpads.
The R70x's is super neutral, very open, and very comfortable. The soundstage is not the widest but its wide and immersive. I personally don't have any complaints about the sound. They have a way of delivering great detail without ever sounding harsh or to in your face. That's not to say that they are laid back either. I think they just strike the perfect balance in terms of tonal balance, imagining, comfort, build, design, and cost.
That being said, the build quality is very good in my opinion. I think the problem other users are having is that these these headphones don't feel luxurious. Its clear that Audio-Technica saved some money in the construction department but I would not say they are poorly constructed or cheap. These headphones punch well above their weight. For the price, these offer the best bang for your buck. They beat almost all other headphones I've ever heard and for under $500 I don't think and thing comes close - assuming you want an uncolored, and accurate detail retrieval.
The only downside to these headphones is the impedance. At 470ohms, you will almost certainly want to invest in a DAC/Amp setup to get the most out of these. And for those who may not be familiar with open-back headphones, these are NOT portable. They are very open so people can hear what you are listening to and you can hear outside noise. This is not a negative mark against the headphones. They are intended for studio environments (i.e. a quiet atmosphere). This feature benefits you in a few ways. It creates a more immersive and "out of head" listening experience. Additionally, they are less fatiguing than closed headphones because you don't get the back pressure created by the drivers.
All in all, this is an excellent headphone that deserves far more attention and credit that it currently receives. I highly recommend it. Just know their intended use before buying.
These will immediately help your mixes if you are using budget monitors or have less than ideal mixing quarters.
To be fair, this is my first set of super-high-quality cans and I have not tried anything else. I am sure anyone looking at these considers him/herself highly critical of their audio output. and as one of you I can only say that I have been very pleased.
The open-back is best-suited for quiet environments. The spaciousness the open-back provides reduces fatigue in comparison to my past experiences with closed backs. This is also the reason I am often CONVINCED the sound is coming from my main monitors.
High quality construction, though incredibly light to wear. Spacious cup allows your entire ear to be surrounded by the speaker. Whether your scrimpin' and savin' or ballin' large, I recommend getting these one way or another.
Sound is the best I've heard in a headphone yet. The tuning is a touch warm compared to flat out neutral which makes very easy to wear for hours and not feel fatigue from harsh treble or odd peaks. Listening to all sorts of genres and never fails to impress. I recommend this headphone for studios, gaming, music (all genres), and late night movie watching. The open back really gives you a very natural listening experience as if the music is surrounding you.
