Audio-Vision: Sound on Screen Paperback – April 15, 1994
There is a newer edition of this item:
Chion argues that sound film qualitatively produces a new form of perception: we don't see images and hear sounds as separate channels, we audio-view a trans-sensory whole. Expanding on arguments made in his influential books The Voice in Cinema and Sound in Cinema, Chion provides lapidary insight into the functions and aesthetics of sound in film and television. He considers the effects of such evolving technologies as widescreen, multitrack, and Dolby; the influences of sound on the perception of space and time; and the impact of such contemporary forms of audio-vision as music videos, video art, and commercial television. Chion concludes with an original and useful model for the audiovisual analysis of film.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2008I consider this book a "Bible" for Motion Picture Sound Theory: Chion teaches us that also creativity has got rules and we've got to follow these rules to find the way to realize our ideas in the right way.
If you are, or want to be, a sound editor, designer or mixer, you have to read and study this book before learning any software secret: this book will help you to understand how to guide the audience expectations and feelings.
I use this book to bring the great research made by this great composer, filmmaker and teacher to my Sound Design course students.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2013I definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to get into audiovisual studies. It's not too technical so someone (like me) with no film background can get into it and yet someone without a music background could likely read it as well. You may need to do some research of the film examples Chion uses if you are not familiar with them. The translation is excellent.

I can't say I know too much about Michel Chion himself, but what I do know is that his book 'Audio-Vision' (translated from French) is without a doubt a Bible for my studies. It neither lectures nor speaks down to the reader, but in plain English describes different theories that have otherwise been a mystery to viewers and scholars alike. The book is split into two Parts - one taking a direct approach to audio-visual theory, whilst the second (described as going 'beyond') gets to the more nitty-gritty argumentative stage. I'd call this a Bible because it can literally be picked up, and with each 'Part' having sub-headings for the various theories/semiotics, it is incredibly easy to read.
The book is also broad in its target audience, for it does not root itself to any particular form of media. As a Music student at University, Chion's work has encouraged me to continue my research into film soundtracks and I couldn't think of a better recommendation if you're new to this area.

I'm studying music at Univeristy and was constantly taking this book out of the Library...along with everyone else it seems! After three years of taking this book out of the university library I decided to buy it! Great book, lots of useful information regarding sound/music and moving images. A must have if analysising film sound/music and generally an interesting book.
Translation is good too (French to English) and I think the book is definatly worth the money! :)
