The first thing I tired with the new device was just hooking it up with the cheap HDMI cables I already owned. After all, a quick google search seems to indicate that buying expensive HDMI cables is a scam because these digital cables either work or they don't. there are TONs of articles explaining how cheap cables will transmit exactly the same expensive cables. These people have obviously not been introduced to HDMI 2.0...
Needless to say, my cables gave me up to about 4k30 before my TV started cutting in and out. After a chat with support from NVidia and some searching in some AV forums online regarding 4k60 4:4:4 over HDMI, I was pretty confident I had a cable problem. No big deal. I jumped on amazon, typed HDMI 2.0 in the search box, and order up some nice new cables. I ended up buying IBRA cables, which said right in the listing that they support HDMI 2.0, 18 Gbps, etc. Perfect! 2 days later, I was plugging everything back in with some shiny and thick new cables and.... same problem.
I have to admit, at this point, I really considered giving up. I figured I was doing something wrong and just didn't understand the real problem, but I have never been the type to just let something like that go. So, I returned to Google and did some more searching.
After countless hours of research and some chats with some people that seem to be a lot smarter than I am in this space, it became clear that this whole HDMI 2.0 thing is a huge cluster %!. IT seems like a lot of companies are assuming there cables are capable because hey met or exceeded HDMI 1.4, but they aren't really testing them. What this means for us as consumers is that there is no real way to know if a cable will work at the full 18 Gbps without actually buying one and testing it out. Worse than that, you might get one that does and another that doesn't! You may even find they only work at that speed in one direction! Are you crying yet?
This is about when I stumbled upon AudioQuest. This was about the same time that I was seriously considering optical HDMI, which is what several professionals recommended, but it seemed silly to do optical for a 5-6ft run of cable. As far as I can tell, they don't even make optical HDMI cables that short! I found AudioQuest because they had some non-optical cables that were more expensive than the optical ones! Now, I would never spend $1000 on a 6ft cable, but they had cables that were under $50.
At this point I was a little shy, so instead of dropping another $100 to try out some cables, I decided to email the company first. AudioQuest support was great. They responded within a few hours and told me that every cable they make is fully HDMI 2.0 capable out to 10m. Needless to say, I was still skeptical, but I decided to give them a try. Oh boy, was I glad I did.
These cables are not as flashy as you might expect. They look relatively plain. They have small connectors, which I personally like because they don't interfere with nearby connections. The jackets are black and grey striped. No excessive gold. No mesh jacket. You can even bend them! BUT... THEY FREAKIN WORK!!! I plugged these bad boys in and everything worked on the first try. No joke, I think I smiled for a solid day.
So, THANK YOU AudioQuest for making a cable that actually does what it says. Thank you for making a high-end product that is actually high-quality and does what it promises. I can honestly say that despite their relatively high price, I don't think I will bother with other brands in the future because it just isn't worth the headaches that ensue.
