About the Author
Derek Perkins, originally from the UK, has narrated nearly two hundred audiobooks to date in a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres. He became a professional narrator in 2012, a move helped by his knowledge of three foreign languages, a facility with accents and a lifelong love of the written and spoken word. An award-winning performer, Derek has received multiple AudioFile Earphones awards. In 2015 and 2016, he was nominated for an Audie, the industry’s top award. He was a double finalist in 2014 and 2015 for the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences Best Voice award in two categories. AudioFile magazine named him a 2014 and 2015 Best Voice, Biography & History. Derek works from a professionally equipped home studio near Boston, MA. He is a member of the Audio Publishers Association and SAG-AFTRA. He was prompted to write this book as a result of discussions with many aspiring narrators wanting to understand the best, most effective way of breaking into the audiobook business. Now Derek is revealing the process that took him from rookie to award-winning professional within three years in the wonderful world of audiobook narration.

Derek Perkin's guide is outstanding - he takes you through each aspect of audiobook narration - how to get started, where to find work, setting up a home studio, marketing, the operational process, and how to manage the administrative aspects of your business.
When I was just starting out as an audiobook narrator, I referred to it constantly and followed Derek's suggestions for getting started with ACX. I still revisit sections, particularly marketing and operational procedures - 18 months later. I highly recommend this very useful, comprehensive guide.
I cringe when I hear new narrators slaughtering audiobooks (usually in the self-publishing world). Primarily, because they don't even know how bad they are, or the etiquette and subtle nuances that audiobook listeners expect.
This is a MUST READ for any non-fiction author who is going to attempt narrating their own book, or for any new fiction narrator who needs a thorough primer on what the best in the industry call "the basics" and what newcomers to the art form call REVOLUTIONARY.
BUY TWO COPIES, it will help you immensely, and give the other to the narrator you know who has immense talent, but is struggling to resonate with listeners, get steady work and find their groove enjoying their work.
