I highly recommend getting speaker stands like the IsoAcoustics ISO-L8R130. They bring your speakers up to ear level and the sound just OPENS UP.
The only downside isn't a downside at all. If you aren't using a highquality source for music, these speakers will let you know. Anything less than Loessless can become pretty apparent pretty quickly.
The packaging was pretty stellar, though I can't help but think it might be a little cheaper if they didn't use felt bags that they put them in. I mean how often are you even going to use them?
Initially, I had some static from the speakers when I had switched on the loudness button and turned the volume up. This ceased to be a problem after a few hours of playing. I have logged in about 50 hours of playing time and the speakers keep sounding better. They are spaced about five feet apart and stand three and a half feet from the floor where they project true stereo quality. My old Teac record player with built-in speakers never did justice to those old records.
The speakers are part of my system that includes a Nakamichi receiver/amp and AudioTechnica turntable.
My first pair of A4s were black, and they blend into the entertainment system nicely. The new pair went into our home office, which features a lot of light wood tones (mostly ash). I was ready to go with the black, thinking [a] they match the computer displays and such, and [b] they are less expensive. I consulted my aesthetic-sensitive-spouse, and she lobbied for the bamboo.
I deferred to her decorating sense. And I am very glad I did, because the bamboo cabinets are stunning. Work-of-art stunning. The Audioengine website has some decent (higher resolution) photos that are far more accurate than what you'll see here; take a look over there to get a better sense of how these fit your décor. If you are lucky enough to have a match, the extra cost of the bamboo is well worth it.
I listened to quite few speakers that were far more expensive than these. I was very hesitant to buy speakers without listening to them first because musical preferences are so individual, but I kept hearing such good things about AudioEngine, I decided to give them a try.
I debated whether to get the bamboo finish but I'm very glad I did - they look as good as they sound.
