I bought this to use with my iPad and iPhone for on the go listening, but there's a power restriction that won't let you plug in this DAC directly. Thankfully, it's easy to bypass:
1. Connect the Apple USB adapter to the iPad/iPhone.
2. Connect a small 4 port USB Hub to the Apple USB adapter, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE EXTERNALLY POWERED.
3. Connect the Firefly to any of the ports in the USB Hub.
Voila! There is a glitch that makes iOS devices spit out more power when a hub is connected, powered or not. This trick also works with a lot of other USB accessories.
Back to the DAC.
The build quality is amazing. It comes in a stylish faux leather pouch. The dragonfly logo lights up, bringing the cool factor to levels over 9000. The sound quality impact is definitely noticeable, it opens up the sound stage, and allows you to hear everything separately, and in detail.
The only thing that some might consider a drawback, is that it very slightly decreases the bass punch, but in exchange, it makes it sound amazingly rich and delicious. This effect is specially noticed in my Vmoda M100, since these are very basshead cans, the efffect is very welcome.
On my AKG Q701, I use a Fiio E11 in addition to this DAC and turn the bass boost to 2. With this setup, the Q701s melt my brain and bring me to a state of perfect Nirvana as I lay down listening to audiophile mastered albums.
I love this DAC, have owned it for almost a year, and if I lost it, I'd buy another one in a heart beat.
