Films Included:
Breakfast at Tiffany's
From the opening strains of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's haunting, Oscar-winning song "Moon River," you'll once again be under the alluring spell of that madcap, carefree New York playgirl known as Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in this 24-carat romantic comedy based on Truman Capote's best-selling novella. George Peppard is the struggling and "sponsored" young writer who finds himself swept into Holly's dizzying, delightfully unstructured lifestyle as she determinedly scours Manhattan for a suitable millionaire to marry.
Funny Face
In the Academy Award-nominated classic, Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire join forces, lending their song and dance talents to a timeless musical. When a fashion magazine mogul (Kay Thompson) and her head photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) scout out a bookstore for their next photo shoot, Dick discovers the unique face of the bookseller and amateur philosopher Jo Stockton (Hepburn). Whisked off to Paris, Jo is seen transformed into a global supermodel and finds herself falling for the photographer who first noticed her sunny, funny face.
My Fair Lady
This beloved adaptation of the Broadway stage hit stars Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, a sassy, working-class London street vendor, and Rex Harrison, as the elitist Professor Higgins, who attempts to turn Eliza into a sophisticated lady through proper tutoring. But, when the humble flower girl blossoms into the toast of London society, her teacher may have a lesson or two to learn himself.
Films Included Cont.:
Paris When it Sizzles
Screenwriter Richard Benson (William Holden) has three days to finish his movie. But to meet his deadline, he needs the help and imagination of his captivating secretary Gabrielle Simpson (Audrey Hepburn). Together they write and revise a romance/mystery as they envision themselves in the lead roles. The suspense builds as each page pulls the writing team, and their alter egos, closer and closer.
Roman Holiday
Roman Holiday was nominated for ten Academy Awards, and Audrey Hepburn captured an Oscar for her portrayal of a modern-day princess rebelling against her royal obligations who explores Rome on her own. She meets Gregory Peck, an American newspaperman who, seeking an exclusive story, pretends ignorance of her true identity. But, his plan falters as they fall in love. Stylishly directed by William Wyler, this romantic comedy ranks as one of the most enjoyable films of all times.
Sabrina
Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and Audrey Hepburn star in a Cinderella story directed by renowned filmmaker Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot). Bogie and Holden are the mega-rich Larrabee brothers of Long Island. Bogie's all work, Holden's all playboy. But when Sabrina, daughter of the family's chauffeur, returns from Paris all grown up and glamorous, the stage is set for some family fireworks as the brothers fall under the spell of Hepburn's delightful charms.

These older films offer a good juxtaposition between older values and modern times. It is completely unfair to judge the past by present values. Are there offensive bits in old films which would never be tolerated today? Most probably, but why be offended when you can just as easily choose to understand how far we have come? In some respects we have come far, socially. In other respects, we have seriously digressed. I also like to see the contrast in the ways society has devolved as compared to the time in which they made these old films. Why bother watching historical films, if you don’t learn from them?
These vintage shows often tackle many still current human issues such as, indigenous peoples' rights, sexism, racism, greed, graft, politics, love, lust, envy and strife, and all more easily taken with an ounce of self reflective humor. As opposed to being politically correct, they don't candy-coat sensitive triggers or white-wash and hide the rancor, they allow you to feel repulsed by the villains behavior and they let you learn from it. They generally had a moral lesson to strengthen your own moral compass, albeit some are outdated modes of thinking. Still it is good to see the differences.
Also, I much prefer the older way of filming every scene in long, uninterrupted takes. To my mind, the modern cut and pan style of filming loses much in comparison. The slower pace allows one to relax a bit and feel unhurried. The focus was more on character and plot development. Often the "good guy" turned out to be the "bad guy" and that surprise is a lesson in itself.
In comparison, modern films seem to shove the plot at you in the first 5 minutes. They tell you who to like and who to hate. And they rely on CG theatrics instead of good story development to carry it through to the end. My favorite films seem to be small ensemble casts, in little changing settings, with excellent plot development and character evolution, which move the story forward with clever, witty dialogue.
Yes, the sound or picture quality can be poor as compared to current standards, but if you know about the history of the equipment used to create the film; the condition in which they were likely stored; and the quality of speakers and recording equipment which were used at the time; then you will not be bothered by the poor film quality at all. You will simply feel that the inferior quality is a normal part of the viewing experience.
It is completely unfair to judge an antique by modern standards. Instead, focus on the story, the filming techniques, the costumes, the furnishings, the architecture, the dialog, and the historical social significance of the film.
PROS:
Condition as expected. I enjoyed it.
CONS:
As in most antique media: Contents are sometimes in random order. Often menus don’t work. Usually you have to resize the aspect at which they are played. I consider these all to be a “normal” part of the experience.
COMPS:
As compared to modern films, adjust your level of expectation. When you approach them in this way, you will not be disappointed.
VERDICT:
Met or exceeded my expectations. Good/great value for money.
I hope you found this information helpful. Have a great day! ~Savvy Shopper
As an actress, she was simple and easy-going. Honest. Believable. Tender.
As a human, Audrey was in a class by herself.
This movie collection is a great introduction to her film work.
