About the Author

John James Audubon (April 26, 1785 ? January 27, 1851) was a French American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He was notable for his expansive studies to document all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (1827?1839), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon identified 25 new species.

The size of the book/prints is quite nice; not too big, not too small. The prints are very crisp & clear, and in NO way look to be of lesser quality for the sake of mass production as these types of books can sometimes can sometime be. A great addition to the library or coffee table & well worth the purchase (especially at an Amazon bargain!).

I actually purchased a second copy of this book. I was so impressed with my first that I purchased a 2nd to frame individual prints(they're a perfect 8x10), and they look amazing in the grouping of twelve on my wall (I was fortunate to find 12 large-scale, very expensive-looking frames for only $10 each on clearance). Everyone thinks I paid a fortune for them!

Beautiful book. I admired framed Audubon prints in decorating magazines and at Pottery Barn's website for a long time, but couldn't afford their prices. I finally decided to buy this book, use an Xacto knife, and cut out prints to frame myself (yes, feel free to cringe at the thought of tearing apart such a beautiful book--I did, too). I framed twelve prints in inexpensive 8x10 dollar frames from a store of a similar name.

Audobon's Masterpieces is simply put: gorgeous. I bought this book for the sole purpose of having a pretty book of birds to lay out on my coffee table (and appear stylish, but also intellectual - science people!) and I have already began ripping out pages to matte and frame on my walls. It's ridiculous, as an avid book lover I would never dream of tearing pages out of a book, but these illustrations are just THAT beautiful. The pictures are calming and lovely and I can't say enough how happy I am with my purchase.

Please buy this for your sister, mother, nerdy bird-loving brother/father/boyfriend/hobo down the street. It brings a smile to my face every time I glance at the pretty hardback cover and randomly open up to a page of beauty. Nature is beautiful, people.

It's great to see so many of these famous works, collected into one affordable volume. Though hardly a complete representation of Audobon's work, this offers scores or reproductions to study and enjoy, printed large enough that all but the finest details come through clearly.

Too bad this kind of work has largely been supplanted by photography. Photos, of course, capture the literal truth of an image with mechanical perfection. But, for a naturalist, the details unique to each species matter - markings on every part of othe animal, common poses, etc. It's hard to convince a bird to pose in exactly the way that will display its distinguishing features most clearly. That's where the artist has an advantage, in lifelike renderings that approach photographic literalism but with a scientist's eye for the specifics that matter most. This will please anyone who loves birds, wildlife in general, or art with such purpose and heriitage.

I purchased this book several years ago because I've always loved Audubon's paintings of birds. I was even more impressed with the book upon receiving it when I went through it page by page. I know that people cut out the pages and frame different prints but this book is so beautiful that I just couldn't stand the thought of doing that. Perhaps if I could find a used book very cheaply it would be feasible to do this.

There are 150 prints that go from the raptors all the way to wrens and hummingbirds. Audubon's style is meticulous in his detail and while a photograph is beautiful, these paintings have a quality and precision that has been unsurpassed even until today with paints. His use of color is spot on making for breathtaking studies of the colorful and plain birds.

Each page in this book is a stand alone print without another print on the back of it. If I am having a stressful day all I have to do is pull this book out, put on Vivaldi's Four Seasons and leaf through the pages.
