Large Families and Groups
Bulk, shelf-stable food is an economical way to prepare meals for large families, church groups, schools and restaurants. The airtight pail, when unopened, keeps food fresh for up to 30 years. Once opened, food will last up to a full year. That’s plenty of time to prepare many high-quality and great tasting meals for any type of gathering. In the event of an emergency, bulk foods such as rice and beans can be added to soups, casseroles and breakfast dishes to extend the number of meals that are needed to help nourish neighbors or community members who may be suffering.
Keep Your Empty Pails!
Once you’ve consumed the food, an empty pail can be used in dozens of ways, here are just a few: collect rain water, keep papers and valuables dry, trash can, livestock feeder, wash dishes, coal/charcoal storage, carry wood for fires, store kindling, gather fruits and nuts, flotation device, game feeder, step stool, grow potatoes, store tools, mix concrete, helmet, shovel and more.
Shelf Life 101
The quality and taste of most Augason Farms products will last up to 20 or 30 years, however it varies based on food storage conditions and ingredients. Some products such as eggs, creamy soups and bread mixes have a shelf life up to 5 to 10 years. Extreme temperatures will deteriorate the quality and shelf life. For best results store in a cool and dry place at temperatures between 55°F and 70°F.

Reading the label states 30 year shelf life unless opened. Well, it's opened and what is disturbing is I can't see how this loose fitting lid could be airtight to allow an oxygen absorber to do its job. I have several buckets of augason farms long term food but now I have to rethink my strategy. I would have thought the grain would have been in a sealed plastic pouch inside and separate of the bucket and loose lid system however it was definitely not. I would now expect to find in 25 years a bucket full of mealy bug carcasses...
I was skeptical about the price. But the reviews looked pretty good. So I took a gamble on a bucket for seed purposes. And boy oh boy am I glad I did as the germination was literally overnight. Less than 48 hours later I have a full tray of wheat grass almost ready to put under light. I used the led grow lighting to better illuminate all the tiny roots.
I have grown many trays of hydroponic microgreens similarly. And these are doing great on plain printless paper towels with a faint sprinkle of mycorrhizae. In two day's I will feed with 3-5 drops of GH Floralicious Plus (maybe a few drops of kelp after a week) and we're off to the races. I am growing this test tray for my cat who especially loves Bok Choy and If all goes well I will buying many more buckets.
I can't tell you how it tastes or bakes up. But I can tell you these buckets are air tight and very hard to open without destroying the lid. I had to use two screwdrivers and brute force. If you reseal it becomes just as hard to open the second time. So don't plan on keeping the bucket long. Only open when you are ready to use and have time freezer bags on hand to store the seed in batches.
I've purchased wheat berries from Emergency Essentials, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a local co-op. The taste of Augason Farm's wheat berries is comparable: I make bread from wheat flour only, ground from berries. No one in my family of 7 noticed the difference when I switched brands to Augason Farms.
Despite the fact that these containers are for long-term food storage, the price rivals that of bulk purchases packaged for immediate use. I've watched the fluctuation in price for the 26lb and the 40lb size and the per pound price for the smaller package is consistently a better deal. When compared to several other supplier prices (see the list above, plus I compared Honeyville and other, smaller companies), the per pound price of Augason is lower for each after factoring in shipping costs to the east coast. Some companies offer free shipping on very large purchases and some offer a flat ship rate so it benefits you to buy more. Walmart prices on this product have matched Amazon's each time I've ordered but comparatively little needs to be purchased from Amazon to earn free shipping for those who don't have prime, while Walmart requires a larger purchase to earn free shipping and takes much longer to ship.
Bottom line: this product is priced well for short or long-term food storage. Free shipping options make it easy to build stores slowly or to purchase just enough for immediate use.
Don't forget to purchase at least one tool to open the containers.
It works. Good crunchy, nutty flavor right out of the container.
HOW TO OPEN (without destroying the lid) - Take a pair of pliers and start at the sealing strip (lid has an extra 1/3 inch sealing strip) and PULL. It will come off and then peel as many times on that strip until it is COMPLETELY off.
Once that is done then use hands at two corners to pry up the edges, once you do that it will snap off and can then be reapplied like the top of a Homer bucket from Home Depot (those orange ones).
