Not everyone will have an outlet within 15 feet of the front door - but most everyone will have an entryway light. I purchased GE 54276 Polarized Handy Outlet Plug and in place of one bulb is now my August Bridge. This means you will need to leave that light switch on all the time - get a cover guard to stop anyone accidentally flipping the switch. My fixture holds two bulbs - and since I'm doing the smart home thing I put a Philips Hue bulb in there and control it through the many options that allows. Hue is an LED bulb that generates almost zero heat - I wouldn't do this with anything except an LED bulb. Were I not a Philips Hue customer, I would have just left it empty - with other lights in my place on, there isn't really a need anyways.
Not claiming this is a solution for everyone, just sharing what I did in case it helps someone else.
Being in the unique position of being a repair electronics technician, network/IT technician, and someone who does a lot of DIY work, I was very motivated to tackle on the August Connect. I will try to keep things short if possible.
Below is an outline of dates and issues I had plus comments about each step along the way up to the point of whenI was able to successfully make the August Connect work.
According to the instructions for the Connect, the device must be near the August Smartlock in order for both to be able to communicate effectively. This of course was going to present a problem since the main entrance is about 50ft away from the main router which would mean that I would have connection issues between the main router and the August Connect.
August 4th, 2016: Received August Connect; installed the same day and was able to connect to the main router successfully; within an hour however, started getting "...went offline. You will be unable to operate your lock remotely" message.
August 5th, 2016: Moved August Connect closer to the main router and received the "...went offline. You will be unable to operate your lock remotely" message again.
August 6th, 2016: Placed an order for (3) 6ft SMA extention cables for the main router to boost the router signal
August 17th, 2016: Received SMA extension cables, installed on the main router, and yet the signal is not strong enough to reach the August Connect. I was still getting the "...went offline. You will be unable to operate your lock remotely" message.
At this point, I had already made the assumption based on all the steps taken that August had used an inferior wireless card inside the August Connect which was causing all of the connection issues. I could've assumed an inferior router on my end but I have a decent one; the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router to be exact. So with the assumption of a cheap wireless card inside the August Connect, I decided to try connecting a second router right next to the August Connect.
August 18th, 2016: After installing a second router right next to the August Connect, I no longer have connection issues when I try to operate the August Smartlock remotely. It has been over 24 hours and I have yet to get a dropped connection from the August Connect.
Bottom-line, based on this one single experience, the August Connect works as it is intended but I can certainly understand the frustration with many in getting this thing working out of the box. If I was part of the August staff, I would certainly make it a point to ensure that customers know that in order for the August Connect to work effectively, it must be certainly be near a router. Of course, not everyone knows how to program a router which brings its own set of challenges.
I just placed an order for a second August Connect since I have another August Smartlock. I will come back and explain how it went with the installation of that second one and whether I am having connection issues.
August 24th, 2016- No dropped connections. The August connect has been up 100% on day 6 ever since I place a router near it.
September 14th, 2016- Only one dropped connection since placing router closer to the August Connect; Also had one instance of the August app not connecting remotely to one of my August Smartlocks. It turned out that I needed to reset the lock by pulling out and putting back the batteries.
March 5th, 2017- Since my last update in September, I have had no connection issues. My 2 August Connects have been working flawlessly. This is my last update.
So would I recommend the August Connect? I like what they do for me and I can't complain. As I already said, they are working perfectly for me at this point. But getting them to work how they are intended to work certainly makes me think twice about recommending them. I suspect many won't have the patient nor the technical know how to get the August Connect to work to the point where you will stop getting the "Offline messages....". But if you like a challenge as I do, you won't be disappointed. Good luck!!!
All the outlets i have, even the one that's 5 ft away had poor signal. Even 5 feet away with direct line of sight.
It only works if I run an extension cord and place it literally right next to the door (see pic I attached to this review) and even at this point it is not great, just "Good" signal strength for BLE per the app signal strength test! My WIFI was great strength in all outlets I tried. Also, even at this setup, remotely connecting to this via the app was taking forever.
So bottomline, the Bluetooth module inside this product is not strong enough so the suggestion in the description to have it 10-15 ft from the August lock is inaccurate. it is more like 2 - 3 ft for a Good (not Great) signal in my experience.
FYI: I tried to connect to the lock with my phone at each exact, same spot where I tested this. My phone/app did not have any problem connecting to the August lock unit. I think the lock has a good Bluetooth module. The problem is the Connect module itself.
I found that while the remote access features somewhat worked, the device was never unable to unlock my door based upon location detection. I was careful to follow all the guidelines on their website, such as make sure your phone is not in do not disturb mode, etc.. However, I found that no matter all the guidelines I followed I was still unable to get the product to work.
I reached out to support and they indicated an update should be coming out to assist me with my issue; however, a considerable amount of time has passed and unfortunately I not only have not heard from support, but have not seen an update that resolved the issue.
It's too bad as the "auto-lock" feature works very well; however, the auto-unlock feature has not been something I have been able to get to work. I was hoping that since I have spent additional funds explicitly for this functionality that that would not be the case.

1). The August Wi-Fi connect is just horrible. I connected it to the lock no problem but trying to add it to google home was just a nightmare. Added the device in google home and it did not work. Removed it from google home and tried to add it again, nothing. Did not even show up anymore but said it was successful. After hours of trying to unlink and link it in google home. I decided to reinstall the august connect from the reset to pairing it to the lock again. Bingo the device finally decided to show up in google home. Tried to contact august and spent 1.5 hours on hold with no one answering. Just gave up. There is no customer service. Be WARNED !!!!!!! you are on your own.
2). The Bluetooth range on the august Wi-Fi connect it really really bad. Once installed it shows good signal but after a while it always reports bad Bluetooth signal to the lock even with it right next to the lock. That is if the signal strength check works. Most of the time it just says fetching!!! Super bad. Crappy hardware.
3). In order to get the lock status over Wi-Fi (august connect), you always need to hit the Wi-Fi symbol next to the lock status circle. That is a bit of a pain. Worse, if you leave home and you are at a remote location, checking the status, it tries Bluetooth and fails and then you have to hit the Wi-Fi symbol to get the status. Why do you need to do that, the app is aware of the location so it knows you are not at home, so why bother with Bluetooth? just use Wi-Fi period, don’t bother with Bluetooth. Simple enough? August please change that in the app.
4). One bug that is really annoying is that for some reason, if you are away from home, sometimes the remote access via Wi-Fi just does not work. You can try and try hitting the wifi button but nothing. It says cannot connect. But if you kill the app via android (force it to stop in background) then relaunching it and checking the status over Wi-Fi works instantly. So it is not the august connect but the android app that is just messed up. FIX This please!!!!!! Should not have to kill the app and restart. But once restarted, it continues to work until you get home. So something in the transition from home to away messes up the android app. But the auto unlock part still works, just not the remote status via Wi-Fi until you kill the app and relaunch it. Super pain in the backside. Come on august, clean up your product.
5). Now the Google home integrations is horrible. You need to say “OK google, talk to august” Then you get a man’s voice and need to ask him the status of the lock. Really? Why can it not be integrated with Google assistant? Why do you need to talk to another assistant? Please fix that. Integrate it better. I have Chinese products that are way better integrated into Google Home without having to do all these round about to get the status of my lock. August, hire a crack programmer that knows what he is doing and rework the google home part. That is if you want to have a great product in the market. Almost everyone will eventually integrate this to Alexa or Google Home. So at the very least, IMPROVE IT, IMPROVE T, IMPROVE IT.
So as it stands, the lock hardware is great, the August Wi-Fi connect hub is just trash. The August home app is full of bugs and the Google Home integration is poor at best. That also needs to be redone. But if they fix all that, this could be the lock for everyone. Customer service is NON existent. So if you are a bit technically challenged, forget customer support. There is none unfortunately. I guess no one explained to them that what makes a product is great customer support. But I guess they missed that all together. Love that auto unlock feature. So maybe eventually this could be a great product. Just fix the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi connect and app and one day you will be at the top of the heap. This product is almost $ 300.00 CDN. People want what they pay for, a great product. That is my two cents.
its just poor implementation.
1) SLOW. "fetchingstatus" i have to MANUALLY press that WIFI button on the app.. why? if i'm at home, on wifi, the app should just simply work with wifi, rather than defauilt to bluetooth.... i have to manually press "wifi" , wait some 20 seconds??? then it fetches status, and then i can unlock.
i might as well just run down to the door and open it -- my Aug connect is 1.5meters away.. NOT far. so dont tell me this is a distance issue.
2) theres NO ability for warning alerts to notify me if door has NOT been locked for X minutes. even my garage door opener which is significantly cheaper, does this.
3) notifications for people entering/exiting is significantly delayed. WHY?
i'm pretty upset at this ridiculously priced accessory. i g ive it two stars because 1) it does work.. just not very useful.due to slowness. 2) setup process is easy ...
i think this product is crippled by poor implementation and usafe of wifi on the APP , and just lacking simple features....
At first I did not want to get the August Connect due to all the negative reviews, thinking it will be just a waste.
After running in to some issues with people not being able to open the door, I decided that I need the ability to lock and unlock remotely, so I bit the bullet. Should have done it Earlier! This thing works great! Yes, I had issues with connection, tried a few different spots and was able to find an outlet with a direct line of sight with the lock, shows weak connection but works great. I know when people leave or enter, I know when door is open or closed and I can remotely control the lock.
If you have a good line of sight outlet no more than 10 feet away, buy this, you won't regret it!
Setup was a pain. Took 3 tries for it to connect to my wifi. I have a Netgear R7000, while not the top of the line router, it's still very decent. My phone has full wifi bars. Not sure why it had trouble connecting. It's also VERY SLOW at connecting to the August lock. I timed it and it took about 30 seconds for the lock status to show up on my android app.
Why this thing costs $90 is beyond me. Should be $40-$50.
