August really needs to figure this out. I don't know why they didn't learn from Ring who uses your doorbell power to charge a lithium battery. That would give them ample power to use a stoner wireless signal. It may also email then to design a keypad with adesign point of speed and reliable communication without tradeoffs to maximize battery life.
While it seems like common sense that a keypad would be needed for a smart door lock, August does not seem to agree. The (cheaply made) keypad is a $50+ option. It is important to note that this fact DOES NOT account for the one star rating. The one star rating is due to the reliability (or lack thereof) of the August Keypad.
I had no problems setting up the product through the iOS app. No problems assigning codes or connecting to the hub. As a side note, many reviews have said that you cannot assign specific times that codes are active. I have done this with several of the codes with no problems. This may be a new feature that August has recently added, I do not know.
Now the problem. Four times when I or someone else has tried to use the keypad, it has been dead. When you press a button, normally the first thing that happens is the keypad lights up. When it goes dead nothing lights up. When I go to the iOS ap, it seems to still be connect, it just does not work. The ONLY ting that I can do to get it working again is to remove a battery and put it back in. As soon as I do this, it reboots and works fine. Disconnecting it from the lock (through the ap) and reconnecting does nothing.
I have checked the batteries and they are good, just to be sure, I replace them one time with new ones, nothing helps except removing / replacing the batteries.
The keypad just is not at the same level as the lock. I am shocked that August has not came out with a replacement keypad. $50 is too much for a keypad add on but the cost is not the problem. I have several people with code access only and it is just not a reliable way to give someone access to you house. If I give them app access in addition to a code, they have to go through the whole process of downloading and setting up an account to use. It would even be better if the app allowed someone to enter the code on the phone for access without setting up an account.
None of the work arounds would be necessary if it just worked. I am not sure when I am going to do at this point. Most likely I will replace the whole August system when something else comes out that I like better. Of course, if August would just admit and correct the problem (either by firmware or a complete new keypad), I would happily stay in the August eco-system.
Update - it’s been over a year and the same problems still exist. There have been a couple of firmware updates but it has done nothing to correct the problems. Strongly considering cutting my loses and going with a whole new lock.

1) It's pretty flimsy device in general;
2) Buttons are soft, and difficult to know if theyve been pressed since there is no feedback (like a click)
3) If you enter the wrong code, the device becomes somewhat unresponsive to additional attempts. It can be frustrating; Often i end up having to unlock my door via my phone app.
4) Battery drain is pretty substantial; Be prepared to change the battery 8x a year.
5) Flaky firmware update process. Standing right next to the keypad, the app cannot locate device; Pressing the 'wake up' button doesn't alleviate this failure either. Perhaps it would less buggy but alas, the update process consistently fails.
Originally, bought this so that the younger kids could get into the house easier. The troubles that they have (as well as the adults) make this something to avoid. August, if you're reading this, i'd love to work with you on finding a solution here.
Thanks

DOES NOT OPEN THE DOOR INSTANTLY. At times you need to wait up to 10 second for the door to open. Enough time to reach for your keys and get in instead of being in the cold/sun waiting the keypad to open or not the door.
You never know if it's going to work. Sometimes it wouldn't just open the damn door. Pray before putting in you password.
You want to let your friends make fun of you? Put this piece of garbage in your door front and try to access your home while everybody waits.
I'm completely disappointed.
