Cool and energetic. Probably one of the most seamless integration of jazz-rap out there. This isn't a jazz group playing hip-hop grooves or a hip-hop group sampling jazz. Its a cohesive group with musicians fluent in both genres making some great music.

Common, Robert Glasper and Karriem Riggins is August Greene. This album is for the jazz and hip hop enthusiast. Riggins' has definitely mastered that off-center Dilla style drum beat over the sophisticated stylings of Glasper. Common's lyrics continue to trend upward on this album as it has the last two in my opinion. The subjects matter is what you would expect from the Soulquarian and his list of vocal allies such as Maimouna Youssef (Mumu Fresh), Bilal, Samora Pinderhughes, Brandy (yeah, the 'Boy is Mine' Brandy), and Estelle. On one song in particular, 'Flying Away', Comm touches on personal relationships in that honest & introspective way characteristic of a conscious Chicago emcee. What is also impressive is the variation in metre Comm' uses in his verses that rhythmically sort of fills that space of a jazz musician's solo. The one drawback is the lack of track/album info given with the exclusive download on Amazon. But the experimental release on the retail giant's platform made this a special experience for me. If you are following the growing fusion between the hip hop and jazz scenes, this is definitely an album you want in your collection.

This album touched me in a way similar to Phonte’s uncut, vulnerable, and brilliant sophomore effort No News Is Good News - they’re cousins in that way. As a lifetime fan and follower of each artist, it’s been sheer joy watching each grow in their respective journey. This album is exceptional, and uses the platform not only for a seamless mesh of Jazz, Soul, and Hip-Hop, but one highlighting social issues we all face - particularly those weathered by black culture.

Common is not only better than he’s ever been here, but Riggins’ jazz background, sheer mastery of Dilla’s drum cadences, and wonderful ear for melody coupled with Glasper’s moody, effortless, and fluid key work lifts this album to a truly special place.

It amazes me that Common is going in this way 25+ years in. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard his pen sharper or his delivery with more purpose than here. This album should more than warrant him a spot inside your top 5 emcees of all time - if nothing else just off the strength of his longevity and societal impact alone. He’s more relevant than ever.

Vocal cohorts such as the inimitable Brandy, the spectacularly talented Samora Pinderhughes, and vocalists for the ages MuMu Fresh Youssef, and Andra Day bring their all to this project, and you can hear the importance and urgency in every word and note uttered.

This project is special and much-needed. The exclusive Amazon release was a nice touch as well. Thankful to be alive to see this come to fruition.

It’s hard to list favorite songs, as the whole album is an experience, but “The Time” is speaking to me right now, along with “Black Kennedy”, “No Apologies”, “Let Go” and “Practice”...and of course the single “Optimistic” - just realized I named virtually the entire project.

Buy it. Experience it. It will lift your spirits to
amazing heights and give something we all desperately need in this age - HOPE.

I'm from the D and like Common's usual "conscious rap" and his delving a little personally into relationship issues. Karriem Riggins (shout out to you from the "D"), awesome drummer! Both friends of the G.O.A.T. Hip-hop producer, J. Dilla and enjoyed hearing composer and rap collaborator, Pinderhughes. Black Kennedy is a bop and the jazzy revision of Sounds of Blackness "Optimistic" was very nice!
