August lock not perfect for Airbnb host with international guests outside of North America

Hi guys!
So we ordered the August Lock and the Connect (wifi control) and the device failed miserably for us as airbnb hosts. Here are the reasons why:
- all virtual keys need to be invited by the owner through the app. When someone receives the invite, they need to download the app on their phone and create a new profile. Part of the process is verify via text code. August Lock only supports North America (US & Canada phone #'s). If we had a guest outside of this (which is about 85% of our guests), the SMS Text "may" reach the guest. If not no way for the guest to verify their profile which means no way to receive the virtual key, which means the guest is locked out of the home.

- We also had guests with US phone #'s and they used the lock. It was kinda glitchy because the guest would have to open the app, turn on the blue tooth, wait for it to connect, then go into the app and click on the red button to unlock and wait for a few seconds. We also found our selves waiting in front of the front door to go through all of these steps. It was kinda annoying. Especially when it's raining and when we had things in our hands.

It's a slick lock when it works. The notifications were nice when it worked. The auto lock was nice, however the auto detect when I was near by didn't work too well and was not consistent.

For what we were looking for as airbnb hosts the lock was just not consistent and the con's out weighed the pro's. We went back to our old lock:
Schlage BE365 CAM 505 Camelot Keypad Deadbolt.

We really wished the August lock performed better. Our expectations were not met and as a result we returned the lock. The customer service from August Lock was stellar! Lia and gang did everything they could and even researched what we could have done for possible solutions. Hopefully over time there are updates that would make it more user friendly for international guests. If so, then this would be the perfect front door lock for those hosting on short term rental sites.

Used to work (just barely), now the lock's not even visible through the app.

I have three August locks and i was prepared to deal with the numerous issues, mostly with the app, in short it only works when it feels like it and half-assed at that, but the last straw for me was when one of the locks disappeared from my Galaxy S7 Edge, it's simply not there. Their "support" team is useless.

Here's everything i tried in case someone feels like calling me out:

Re-installed the app, factory reset my device, re-installed 3 different older versions of the app, sent logs, installed on another S7 Edge as well as a OnePlus X, removing the lock from my account and re-adding it (the app crashed everytime i tried to re-add it).

Just to clarify, the lock is visible in the app, surprise surprise, only on my iPhone, which to me is of no use as i do not use my iPhone as my main device.

After asking me to try multiple things, multiple times, to supposedly fix this issue their "support" gave up and simply stopped replying to my emails, it's been more than a month since the lock disappeared from the app and they have yet to provide a clear and insightful reasoning behind this problem which shows that they don't know or care.

They state that they are unable (unwilling) to help me because of the lock not being used in the USA and because they think the problem is with only one device, i mentioned to them many times that it is not with only one device. These reasons are absurd as the lock was visible through the app and worked (just barely) for almost a year before this problem arose.

I do not recommend this product.

DON'T BUY THIS! Not Reliable, Poorly Made, Requires Photo Library access to use!

DON'T BUY THIS!

It is simply too unreliable. It's also way to big! (It replaces the turn of you dead bolt with a big round, poorly/cheaply made big fat round cylinder that falls apart in your hand) And the cap on the front that covers the batteries always falls off. It is a poorly made product.

I have a new iPhone 6S Plus and new Apple Watch, it can take a minute, to minutes, or never for them to work with this lock. Neither the App, nor the Watch see the lock immediately, it takes a long delay and sometimes they don't see it at all. It can work, but only about half, or less of the time.

It's simply very much faster to pull out your key and unlock the door.

PLUS... you HAVE to let the App have access to your Photo's Library, or you can't use the lock, so my family, who didn't want to do that, refused to use this product.

One day I came home and this lock had unlocked itself! (Though I know I left it locked!!!!)

We love this, and the ability to control/monitor it remotely. Very, very well made. I do have some concerns that everyone should be aware of:

1. Batteries - check them before going away on a trip. Our cat sitter was nearly locked out because of a low battery. Ordinarily, batteries should last ~ a year, so maybe ours was an old battery. Replaced it with a Duracell and no further issues.

2. Deadbolt - there are several similar products on the market, but only a few allow for the personalization of the deadbolt. We replaced our cheap, builder-installed deadbolts with Schlage commercial deadbolts. Much better quality and safer.

3. Remote connection - although this lock connects to an iPhone with Bluetooth, it cannot be monitored over the internet with Bluetooth. For internet monitoring, the August Connect WiFi adapter is needed. We bought it and are happy we did.

4. iPhone app - works well, but we suggest not enabling the automatic lock/unlock feature (Bluetooth enabled). It works, but is temperamental.

Overall, extremely well made and great Customer Support.
