Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"Second mothers," "independent spirits," "New York aunts," "role models," "avenging angels"-aunties of all sorts get their due in this medley of personal essays on the bond between aunts, nieces and nephews. The contributors-who are, for the most part, lesser-known journalists, poets, artists, novelists, professors and critics-represent a diverse range of cultures, from African American to Irish Catholic to South Asian. Sturgis, who edits Essence.com, writes of her "special connection" with her Aunt Mildred, a woman who "helped to validate my aspirations when I wasn’t sure I was entitled to them." In another essay, "Aunt Moe Gets Reborn," elementary school teacher Dennis Donoghue writes about his newly widowed aunt’s determination to find love again. A few of the authors share poems and recipes. Although some of the contributions are more saccharine than poignant, the best pieces do an impressive job of celebrating the important roles aunts play in family life.

From Booklist

Aunts have always held a special place^B in the hearts and minds of their nieces and nephews. Able to dispense love, spoil children, stand in for absent parents, be friendly confidantes, and be willing conspirators, they are an indispensable thread in the fabric of extended family life. Keeping that in mind, Sturgis has gathered and collected a series of 35 essays authored by a multicultural cross section of writers representing a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. Individually, each anecdote is a gem; collectively, these stories are a treasure trove of life, love, laughter, and tears. From the tender to the downright^B hilarious, these^B tributes to the second mothers most of us have known and loved constitute a heartwarming contribution to the literature and lore of the American family.
