Joint Review of Feather and Brush: Three Centuries of Australian Bird Art and Australia: 300 Years of Botanical Illustation

“. . . show how explorers, convicts, naval draftsmen, naturalists, scientists and artists, have shaped the history of collecting, recording and classifying Australian plants and birds. . . Using mere words, I shall not attempt to convey the beauty of the illustrations. . . great present for anyone interested in Australia's remarkable flora and fauna. And they should be in every Australian library."

(Linden Gillbank, University of Melbourne, Australia The Victorian Naturalist)

“This is not only a very beautiful book, rich in the finest examples of the botanical illustrators art, it is also a valuable overview of the history of botany in Australia. …This is a superbly produced book.”
(Ed Duyker Sutherland Shire Historical Society Bulletin)

"A beautiful pictorial account of the artistic richness of Australia."

“An enlightening and informative account of the history of illustration of Australian plants. Hewson weaves a tantalising story of science, art, history, exploration and adventure, that keeps the reader enthralled, eagerly seeking out the illustrations for the examples that relate to the text.”
Andrew Drinnan (Annals of Botany (Andrew Drinnan Annals of Botany)

“It’s a book of superb quality, this, with some 160 colour illustrations drawn from many sources in Europe and Australia.”

(Noel Shaw The Examiner)

"Every now and again, we receive a book that is extremely special – a work of art. In this case, a work of botanical art. Such a book is Australia: 300 Years of Botanical Illustration, by Dr Helen Hewson."

(John Thompson The Weekly Times)

“This a beautifully presented volume. It is generously illustrated using fine examples of botanical drawing and painting tracing the development of this art form as it has been applied to the Australian flora.”

This book has clearly positioned itself as the "Bible" for the history of botanical illustration--reporting on most all of the early illustrators of not just Australian (and New Zealander) botanical illustration but of many of the other aspects of Australian natural history. The early artists were assaulted with a wealth of new imagery to record and report to the rest of the world. And many of the artists themselves were the greats of illustration: Parkinson, Solander, the Forsters, Bauer--accompanied by the great natural historians of the day and their champions: Cook, Banks & Solander, Flinders & Hodges, etc. with back up in Europe by Curtis, Edwards and Sowerby, Nodder, Redoute and many others emulating their work in the field. And I should mention, continuing the legacy of those who lost their lives in the endeavor of discovery (Parkinson, Raper, etc).

Hewson also reports the work of the heretofore unknowns, the men in the field that suddenly found themselves as artists: The Port Jackson Painter (Conrad Martin?), Raper, Watling, later Gov.Hunter, and the French.

The quality of the book is good, as are the prints with ample numbers in color.

This book is a solid introduction to this example of human courage and curiosity, and it is a must for any library which concentrates on early Australian history and the history of botanical illustration.

The discovery of Australia by the west coincided with a golden age of botanical illustration, and Helen Hewson's book is a tribute to the many botanists and illustrators who have captured the Australian flora since then. The book includes the professional illustrators who came on voyages of exploration as well as those who were skilled amateurs. Discussion of all the eras of illustration is accompanied by high quality prints of the work of numerous artists. Particularly impressive is the inclusion of the work of modern botanical illustrators. This is an impressive work suitable to those with a technical interest in the history of botanical illustration, as well as those who love Australia's unique flora, or who just love beautiful art
